Located at the mouth of Mississippi River, the Port of New Orleans is Americas gateway to the global market. New Orleans has been a center for international trade since 1718.
Today, the Port of New Orleans is at the center of the worlds busiest port complex Louisianas Lower Mississippi River. Its proximity to the American Midwest via a 14,500-mile inland waterway system makes New Orleans the port of choice for the movement of cargoes such as steel, grain, containers and manufactured goods.
The Port of New Orleans is the only deepwater port in the United States served by six class one railroads. This gives port users direct and economical rail service to or from anywhere in the country.
New Orleans is one of Americas leading general cargo ports. A productive and efficient private maritime industry has help produce impressive results, including the USAs top market share for import steel, natural rubber, plywood and coffee.
In the last 10 years, the Port of New Orleans has invested more than $400 million in new state-of-the-art facilities. Improved breakbulk and container terminals feature new multipurpose cranes, expanded marshalling yards and a new roadway to handle truck traffic.
Maritime activity within the Port of New Orleans is responsible for more than 107,000 jobs, $2 billion in earnings, $13 billion in spending and $231 million in taxes statewide.
The Port of New Orleans has also been a defined area where foreign merchandise gets brought into the country without being immediately subject to the usual U.S. Customs regulations!!!
Nature floods the ground

Hey, I read enough Dr. Seuss to rhyme all the time!
Irrelavent to the question. The fact that New Orleans gained from stolen money does not give them the right to continue to steal.
Do you not benefit from US commerce?
Also irrelavent. See above.
Is New Orleans NOT a border?
The last time I checked, New Orleans didn't border any other countries. It's both a City and a Port Of Entry legally and therefore is the responsibility of the Coast Guard, the Border Patrol, and the Dept. of Customs. Even so, that doesn't make it's rebuilding a Federal responsibilty.
Is New Orleans NOT a major US infrastructure?
It's status as 'a major infrastructure' is irrelavent to your statement. You posited that it's a responsibility of the Federal Government to rebuild New Orleans.
I say you're incorrect both morally and ethically.
I say if New Orleans is such an important Port, let the businesses that use the Gulf of Mexico and the Port Of New Orleans bear the brunt of the costs in rebuiliding the 'infrastructure'.

I'm sorry, but that's stupid. To get them off the bases, it isn't necessary to rebuild their slum in NO. They can live anywhere else in the country they want. If we need a port in NO, let someone build it. If nobody does, then apparently we didn't.
Why must we rebuild?
Simple!
The politician who says otherwise will never be elected again!
The rest of it was a tourist trap. Why the hell are we paying $200 billion to rebuild a tourist trap--and a tourist trap whose main export was immorality, at that? If you want a house of ill repute, build it yourself dude. The only good thing in NO was jazz. So let the jazz musicians move to Baton Rouge. Start a new jazz mecca.
Yeah, uh-huh. So when do I get my d--n $200 billion back?
Well, I'm glad you're both content to steal $200 billion from me as long as you promise to keep a sharp eye on yourselves. So, when do I get my $200 billion? Any a pony? I WANT a PONY!
Did your money NOT go to New Orleans before?
Irrelavent to the question. The fact that New Orleans gained from stolen money does not give them the right to continue to steal.
>>>>Any a pony? I WANT a PONY!
There are ponies available right now at my site: http://www.breederville.com/auction

From reading your comments to everyone, I am safely assuming you didn't read the article I posted.
This port is a major, vital, deep water port that we all use. This is an artery to our commerce.
I compiled some clips from export.gov, National Center for Import and Export, and a Port site from N.O.
Please come by and read them and post your insight.

My BIL is a merchant marine and for years has made trip after trip into the port of NO from the northeast quadrant of the US and the entire eastern seaboard.
IMHO, NO port is essential to the nation's economy and to have a huge, operating port, you must have workers...and to have workers you must have a place for them to live, shop, and raise their families. So NO does have to be rebuilt.
That being said, I hope we have strict government oversight as to Federal Funds that are given to the city/state.
bump!
If you're telling the truth, then people will rebuild the port. IF they don't rebuild it, then you're wrong in your assertion. Trust me, the free market takes care of things--socialism is NOT the way.
Preserving infrastructure is not socialism. Businesses and jobs are needed for people to be self sufficient.
That statement is self-refuting, so I can't see much point in commenting. Building houses for private citizens with forcibly expropriated money is the ESSENCE of socialism. Calling these transfers to private citizens "infrastructure" is just an attempt to put lipstick on your socialism.
The Port of New Orleans is infrastructure.
You like playing word games, huh?
I want NO rebuilt as well. I just don't want the Feds to do it.
Conservatives believe in the private sector, liberals don't. So, what does that make you?
