Located at the mouth of Mississippi River, the Port of New Orleans is Americas gateway to the global market. New Orleans has been a center for international trade since 1718.
Today, the Port of New Orleans is at the center of the worlds busiest port complex Louisianas Lower Mississippi River. Its proximity to the American Midwest via a 14,500-mile inland waterway system makes New Orleans the port of choice for the movement of cargoes such as steel, grain, containers and manufactured goods.
The Port of New Orleans is the only deepwater port in the United States served by six class one railroads. This gives port users direct and economical rail service to or from anywhere in the country.
New Orleans is one of Americas leading general cargo ports. A productive and efficient private maritime industry has help produce impressive results, including the USAs top market share for import steel, natural rubber, plywood and coffee.
In the last 10 years, the Port of New Orleans has invested more than $400 million in new state-of-the-art facilities. Improved breakbulk and container terminals feature new multipurpose cranes, expanded marshalling yards and a new roadway to handle truck traffic.
Maritime activity within the Port of New Orleans is responsible for more than 107,000 jobs, $2 billion in earnings, $13 billion in spending and $231 million in taxes statewide.
The Port of New Orleans has also been a defined area where foreign merchandise gets brought into the country without being immediately subject to the usual U.S. Customs regulations!!!
high yellows?
Whoosh!
::sound of comment going over my head::
Mulattoes and the offspring of mixed race couples and couplings were referred to by various terms, depending upon their skin color.
IIRC, High Yellow was one almost white, but less than swarthy...
There are other terms but this one came to mind.
I can't remember exactly but I believe high yellow was terminology for either a quadroon or an octoroon.
What is swarthy?
So yellow is mixed race?
Must be regional expressions?
>>> quadroon or an octoroon
Never heard that one either.
swarthy = Being of a dark hue or dusky complexion; tawny; swart; as, swarthy faces.
How is yellow dark?
Look it up in the slang book. Those are regional terms.
Any of you bloggers up for writing about the importance of N.O. to let Americans know how vital the port is to our infrastructure?
I copied a lot of tidbits to this article I posted for reference.
Sorry, but it is socialism. The fact that you can't see that is just one more nail in our Republic's coffin.
So, we should keep all the money the businesses invested in federal flood aid insurance?
That is theft.
Vital infrastructure?
We don't need no stinking ports! We can email stuff.
I'm ordering a pizza online right now but can't find the DOWNLOAD button to click....
;^)
/sarcasm in agreement with your point. I cannot write a whole article at the moment, regrets.
Pinging some who might be able to do so....
Yes, you are so naive. The country has moved so far to the left that even the conservatives are socialists.
This hurricane didn't hit NO straight on. It could have been even worse. If I lived thru this nightmare, I doubt it would be easy to sleep easy in the Big Easy again. It will take years to construct effective levees. That is just my opinion. I must say. I have had some fun times in New Orleans though.
Let me know where the download button is.
I want to FTP some shrimp parmigiana.
:)
??? So is high yellow.
Someone who was quadroon was supposed to have 1/4 caucasian blood and someone who was octoroon was 1/8. Can't remember the term for someone who was 50% caucasian.
It's been a very long time since I've read anything about New Orleans history. If memory serves, basically the designations were most important to the courtesans since the higher percentage of Caucasian blood placed a higher value on the status of the courtesan. If I'm remembering correctly the courtesans who could pass for white would choose to be designated as a quadroon or the 50/50 because her value would be higher than a white courtesan.
Sometimes I have to wonder about myself and some of the things I remember.
Right, Biloxi took a direct hit.
The Army Corp of Engineers are brilliant. They will fix the levees.
Facts and figures please. How much money was "invested" in this "insurance"? What were the terms? They are entitled to no more and no less than that spelled out in the policies.
Yikes, I would need a database to keep that straight!
I have enough trouble keep our brackish fish strains labeled for breeding :P
Well, when you find the ftp button that will let me upload and then download me to different locations, let me know. It's been too long since I've been down to Houston to visit my sister.
Now how on earth would I know what everyone's policy information is?
And why are you asking me? Look up your congressperson and email them that question.
