Should we dissolve the military? They're defending the country with money that isn't theirs. Should national defense be done voluntarily by the private sector?

Well said. If he pulls this off, manages to get his social security plan through (I'm an optimist) and we get tax reform.... this country might actually start to pull together instead of apart.

W is an empty suit.

I remember somthing from many years ago when I first learned about "W" and started to support him. WAY before most of you folks had him on your radar. I was involved in a meeting with some eggheads, PHd's that were working for Gov. Bush on a faith based program in the Texas prisons.

During the visit I found out that these people were working for Bush because of how he challenged them. They were not being paid but they were excited about doing something unique for "W". They made it very clear that if they did not hit the timeline marks "W" had structured for the project they "were gone". IE: If they did not perform they were fired.

"W" is no empty suit. He's a good old boy that's smarter than you will ever be and he's an amazing poker player.

I don't like his giving away all this $$$ but I guarantee you he sees things ahead on this "project" that you can't fathom.

I agree; urban renewal on a grand scale - this time we won't be building Cabrini Greens, either....

I don't remember Jesse Jackson being on the Factor in a long time (if ever). He gets beat a lot by Bill O'Reilly because he is a liberal fruitcake. O'Reilly complains often that he won't come and explain himself.

On the spending side, Bush43 is proving to be the all-time biggest spender in US history. A big government Republican, for sure. But he's still better then the socialist FDR and the liberal LBJ.

In political terms, what the President laid out tonight in his speech was necessary. The American people wouldn't want the President to sit by and allow our fellow Americans along the gulf coast to suffer anymore then they have.

OTOH. The problem with this kind of government response is obvious. The President has set a new precedent for natural disasters that all future presidents will have to abide by. God forbid if terrorists set off WMD in one or more US cities. Katrina proved, we are unprepared.

The emphasis was on "entrepeneurs," not on endless entitlements.

Do you really believe this? Seriously, we both know how the government works. Do you think that a good portion of these people are capable of being "entrepeneurs"? seriously

Mercy is an odd name for someone who doesn't want to help

I am glad that I made you smile. My niece from N. MS has been down on the coast helping out. She said you would not believe the damage that has been done to that area. Whole neighborhoods are gone. They had to start a medical site in a school. She also said they need everything. An older lady came in and complained about the sun hurting her eyes. My niece had some sunglasses so she went to her purse and got them to give to the lady. The people in that state are wonderful. When someone is in trouble, they all help out. They do not need someone telling them what needs to be done. They see the need and do it themselves.

IT'S ALL ABOUT BEING ACCEPTED BY THE IN-CROWD AND MADE TO FEEL IMPORTANT BY THE LIBERAL MOVERS

Mark Levin makes that very point on why SCOTUS justices morph in "Men In Black" Read it if you have not.

And the money is tied to responsibility (training, work on housing, etc.).

The Gulf is now a hole in our roof, just like that tear in the Superdome. If we leave it alone, the hole will get bigger, the inside of the house and the foundation will begin to deteriorate and then rot.

Finally clicked what the proposals in the speech reflected.

Private Accounts in Social Security. Requirements of Achievement in education in exchange for federal monies in "No Child Left Behind".

"Compassionate Conservatism", George W. Bush style, undertakes to use Government to expand individual opportunity and freedoms in the long term while not removing the shelter of protection Americans have adapted to from their Government in the short term.

This is why some conservatives are screaming, while others will accept this the premise this hurricane devastated a wide area.

Ex. Some conservatives advocate abolishing Social Security completely. Americans instinctual response in Majority would be fear and revolt. They do not know how, and even fear, managing their own retirements. They've come to rely on the assurance someone else will look after them. Private accounts open the door a crack for them to experiment with self reliance under expectation once adapted they'll demand more freedom over more of their monies. In the long term S.S. becomes an outmoded experiment with Americans once again in charge of their futures, slowly taught the self reliance stripped by "Big Government".

What G.W.B. seems, to me, to be proposing is taking, for an example, Americans adapated to the Welfare state. Putting them in a program similiar to that they left in the sense immediate needs are fullfilled, but in conjunction advancing programs to educate and train so that they can be stripped from the welfare rolls eventually. Helping them to become home owners, slowly eradicating the poverty state with a conjoined effort of federal/State/Local government with inclusions of incentives for the business community to participate and inclusion of Faith based charities/churches/organizations. Bringing all assets, both governmental and private, together to address the problem rather than encouraging all factions to remain at odds with problem never solved.

Yes he did---in the kind way anyone who is human would considering what some are facing right now.

He spoke to federal owned lands in the area being OPEN to homesteading, with those interested in it taking out MORGAGES at special rates and becoming HOME OWNERS instead of renters since SEVENTY PERCENT of those folks RENTED..like the poor often do.

There is NOTHING like home ownership.

And that combined with tax incentives to businesses willing to locate there, offering employment and hope, as well as low interest business loans to minorities etc wishing to rebuild or begin a business is FABULOUS.

That is ALL ABOUT JOB OPPORTUNITY, GROWTH, HOME OWNERSHIP, GETTING OUT OF POVERTY (something blanco will hate) and I thought it was exactly what I would want our nation to do.

We are the best nation on earth...we know how to be good to people by offering a hand UP instead of a trashy hand-down.

Preaident Bush started to scratch out the bigotry of Low Expectations tonight. Nothing will be responded to better by those returning. There is nothing like self respect. It allows you to respect others.
