What are you, pro-poverty? Don't you think that blowing up what creates/escalates it is a good idea?

You said: "BTW, you gave yourself away with this one:"

"the govenor is a woman"

Ah...I was just stating the obvious; the last time I checked, Blanko was and is a woman and unlike Condi Rice, an INCOMPETANT woman at that, who did NOTHING while L.A. was hit with one of the greatest trials it has ever experienced. Unlike, Guliani, Pataki and the rest who gallantly and competently tackled 9/01/01 without seeking to pass the buck and blame the President, the federal government or fellow Americans for their plight.

She said that what the President said lifted her up and gave her hope

And that is, largely, what the speech was for – to let people know the country is behind them. There will, I hope, be time to argue about the best way to allocate money later; right now we want to let people see a light at the end of the tunnel, and assure them that it is not an oncoming train.

Comparing this to LBJ is like comparing Iraq with Viet Nam. And we all know who does both.

Game, Set, MATCH!!

On the money, Dolphy. On the money!

By the way, Ohio, Hugh Hewitt liked the speech as much as you and I.

Im waiting for the day he's gone, and someone dares to suggest a holiday for him and a street/highway in every city. Itll never happen if I get a say.

I'd like to point out that Los Angeles is 60/40 renter/owner and San Diego is 50/50.

Detroit, not considered a shining example of a metro area has a better renter/owner ratio of 45/55. Houston's is 55 renter 45 owner, actually *worse* than New Orleans' ratio.

She said that what the President said lifted her up and gave her hope.

Wow!

I never go to church but I must say... this gives me hope for the future of the U.S.. GW has been given tremendous challenges--like no other president has ever faced, especially with all the race-hatred garbage that has been thrown his way recently...

I'm not a "fundie" as people say, but this really inspires me to a prayer before I log off:

Lord... Please aid the United States and her president, in this time of desperate need. Please help the country unite, to ignore past hurts, income level, skin color ... and help this nation rebuild a great national treasure (the entire Gulf Coast, not just the great city of New Orleans) and come together doing so.

Okay... getting great pressure from hubby et al., to log off for the night, so please excuse my ho-hum phrasing. I do mean it from the heart, though.

If it was your part of the country, we'd be doing it for you.

I disagree. It should be done voluntarily by the private sector. Just another example of a politician being generous with money that isn't his.

The President proposed to spend Federal money on infrastructure and the haters don't like that! Do they expect MS and LA to do that? Do they expect private companies to fix levees and build roads?

Right. I can't figure out what some are so mad about. A disastor is one place the gov should be involved in. Our Gulf Coast is a working coast, very vital to this country. He was great.

I spent almost a month in the Ice Storm of '98 without power, water, heat, and suffered thousands of dollars worth of damages. Did the FEMA man come and bring me hot meals, water, and a nice check? No and nobody expected it.

A decent sized portion of Atlanta was flooded by a hurricane a couple of months ago. FEMA said that the damage didn't meet FEMA standards.

Most on this board aren't really conservatives - they are just cheerleaders. If Clinton had given this speech, they would be up in arms.

Why should we pay to rebuild a place better than it was that I chose not to live? Why did these people not have flood insurance?

***Cute. What would your response be if an area that is home to millions to people, a gateway port for agriculture, and a major oil shipment point were wiped off the map?****

I am constantly saddened by the number of people who do not understand this. I'm sure they also spend time complaining about the cost of fuel. And they will blame the next unemployment numbers (incorporating the Gulf Coast losses of jobs) on President Bush.

Yep.

Bush took away ANY racial momentum the Dems could have been building too.

This is a major disaster, which has NEVER happened on this scale before. It is like the Chicago fire plus Hurricane Camille X 10. We have three major cities almost completely destroyed, New Orleans being the one in the best shape. We have lost entire small towns, highways, bridges. We have the major port for shipping grain out of the US severely damaged. There are oil refineries still not running. In addition, we have a major environmental disaster in New Orleans and almost one million people homeless.

The President is dong what is right. Go shout your "socialism" charges out on the street corner, and see how many people agree with you. I think most would think you are a nut case.

Conservatives like you are what I call "green eye-shade conservatives." You are only concerned about your money. Honest to God, I sometimes think of you guys as Scrooge McDuck in his Money Bin.

Let's say we did nothing, and said "every man for himself." Those one million people would be wandering this country for generations, dragging down whatever area they settled in.

I want nothing to do with your type of conservatism, and you can call me a socialist and a Bush-bot all you want. I reserve the right to call you a miserly crank.

The emphasis was on "entrepeneurs," not on endless entitlements.

All of the benefits were tied to action and responsibility on the part of the one who benefits.
