I'm a fiscal conservative, for cutting taxes and restraining spending. Pres. Bush is not doing the latter. That's because he is a political realist with a heart, not an ideological zealot.
Much of two states were nuked by a hurricane! Hundreds of thousands were chased from their homes, which are now destroyed! "Let them eat cake" is NOT going to be tolerated in this country.

righto drama queen.
That port is trashed.
the economy of the area is trashed.
There is no one there to work the port. They have no where to live. There is NO infastructure there (like banks, DMVs, etc).

You know what really stands out? His apology.
IMO, he owed no apology.
He took the blame on himself. He did it with sincerity and humility. I think that was the most effecting moment. A politician does not usually take responsibility. Certainly when not personally at fault. He took it on himself, and shows himself the better man than his critics. In a way, his willingness to accept that blame is probably going to serve as more of a unifier than appropriating blame to the degree it is deserved on other heads.

That can't be. Rush Limbaugh says Tim Russert is the most fair and objective of all mainstream television journalists.

U R missing the big issue.
Many of us are not saying the Feds should have no role. What we are saying is:
1] Mayor Nagin should not have been on President Bush's "promo list"
2] President Bush should have stated clearly that every city and state in this nation has a responsibility to plan, prepare and manage their locality and the Feds are NOT responsible for babysitting every city in the nation
3] That drastic cutbacks and elimination of programs (social) will take place to pay for this BS
4] Etc., along those lines
You seem to feel that a big centralized statist nation (like old Russia) is what you want. How tragic.

However, neither will take place, the mayor is playing the race card, the govenor is a woman and both are democrats and tonight our fearless leader (whom I and my entire family voted for twice) has just said he is putting them in charge of reconstruction. A utter lie. He said NO SUCH THING.
BTW, you gave yourself away with this one:
the govenor is a woman

I actually hope that private companies do fix the levees and build the roads, or at least put up some, if they want to do business there. That should be part of the process. Why not? Any private company I have seen move in does something to improve the area they are moving into, if it isn't developed.
To: don-o
I question why he felt the need to make the speech. Can anyone help me with that? Sure.
You're clueless.

Yes....Katrina was a wake-up call on how to improve the response to terrorism if it is needed.
Some good will come of this disaster.
