>> I think they mentioned some $300 lb coffee.... That's some I'll never have to worry about tasting.<<

Ooooo! Me too!

Right now we are drinking the last of the name brand coffee.

It's on to rot gut from Aldi's after this.

Thank you, SE Mom! I think this thread can be pretty clearly divided between those who see the vision -- the future, and then those who are living in the past. I like the President's vision of tomorrow.

I'm willing and glad to do my part to help my neighbors in trouble's door, and also so my grandchildren and theirs, and on down the line can be the beneficiaries of such bounty, and of such fine locations in ALA, MI, LA; and to have such a booming economy in their own country, the U.S.A.

My very large family down here has lost everything they own, one uncle retired in August and was proud that he'd just paid off his home in St. Bernard parish. What insurance they have does not recover memories, sentimental items and photographs of the passage of time. There will be a reckoning with politicians, local and state crooks and environmentalists about where the money designated to improve levees went for the last forty years. People will have to be held accountable for stopping improvements and for diverting (stealing funds) but this is not the moment for that. This is a time to help families put their lives and homes back together.

Thank you so much for your post and I am so sorry for you loss. Your post hits just the right tone, IMO. And it echos exactly what the president was proposing -- this is a time to put lives and homes back together. This was an equal opportunity storm, in spite of what the race baiter's would tell us. Though the poor, the elderly and the sick could not get out, they mostly survived (no thanks to local officials). But the middle class who could and did get out also lost everything in the city's flood. And we all have to work together to rebuild and ensure that a new New Orleans will be built better and be more prosperous than in the past.

Some few last words. I am very disappointed with many of my fellow FReepers who can not see that this is truly a national disaster which requires the cooperation of all levels of government and, yes, spending of more federal dollars in response. To engage in petty fighting among ourselves to the extent that it disintegrates to name calling that he or she is purer than others does not enhance this distinguished forum or provide visiters with confidence that we are any different than other mean-spirited discussion groups on the net. I'm sorry to see it reach this level.

This disaster, whether you want to believe it or not, affects probably all Americans, and more directly than we might realize.

I think you are absolutely right, and I think it will be years before the socio-economic impact, well, first, happens, and then second, will be understood.

But I can tell already that even in the 20 minutes or so that my electricity went out that a big debate occured while I missed participating in the live thread (my family just doesn't understand how important it is to participate in a live thread, LOL!).

I might just have to pour a big coffee tomorrow morning and sort through the, oh, what is it now, 1300 or so posts, LOL!

Anyway, let me just say, thank God--and Jim Robinson for this place.

I wonder, Jim, if you ever imagined, when you started, that you would end up being the one place where people all around the world go to "meet up" when important things happen? Amazing...

If you think wearing your green eyeshades is impressing anybody, it's not.

I also see you and Howler have attended the same debating school. When at a loss, cast aspersions. Cheap shots is all you got?

The three former republican governors have been working with the president so that he is well informed of the corrupt democratic politicians here. They know the dirt and did great jobs during their tenure. Not everybody here likes what has been going on in NO for decades. We have cleaned things up elsewhere and NO has been the stranglehold.

"Remember in the 1980s when Philadelphia mayor Wilson Goode had a standoff with the radical group MOVE and he dropped a bomb on their house, resulting in the neighborhood burning down?"

I watched it burn. Unbelievable sight that many people have no knowledge of.

I'm as fiscally conservative as the next person but we have to make allowances here. This is the port of New Orleans. It's a lot more than a tourist attraction in Louisiana. Not to mention all the rest of the Gulf coast that lay in Katrina's path, and the tens of thousands of people devastated by the storm.
The magnitude is such that this is not a regional catastrophe but a national one, and therefore federal expenditures are reasonable and appropriate.

No, this was a natural disaster speech. It also took ammunition away from Democrapweasles who would say that he doesn't care about minorities.

Leave Ohio in November, February and March. The rest of the year is beautiful.

There is nothing quite so lovely as October in Ohio. The weather is beautiful, the skies are blue and the leaves look like they belong on a calendar.

I LOVE my state!
