I do love Ohio, I love it Fall, Spring and Summer, but I hate the Winter. I love the people. I love how beautiful and diverse it is. But I hate snow with a passion.

The snow is part of the reason we have lived in Cali for the last 23 years. That and the jobs. The winters in Ohio are absolutely dreadful. That's why we visit in the summer, at the end of our annual summer trip to the south. Some day we'll pick a state to live in. I really like Tennessee and South Carolina. Mississippi is pretty nice too.

After the speech, Koppel has a field reporter at the Astrodome complex fishing for anti-Bush comments from the NOLA folks there. The first woman questioned doesn't blame Bush at all, likes him, and says the city and state messed up, and then she references the buses! It was priceless!

Maybe it was her first trip out of NO and she saw Blacks and Whites in Houston, living and working in conditions she liked.

I especially like that Bush said he wanted them to be able to go back to their home in LA. Don't think that is what their own pols have in mind.

Mort's wrong. It was a GREAT speech.

Hi OHio - long time no talk to. I agree with you. My hubby and I both agreed after the speech that it was one of his best. His delivery, sincerity, postive can-do-attitude really came across.

My first impressions are usually right on, as are yours. We have followed this President long enough to know when he is good. This speech was really not for us, it was for those affected by the destruction. Mort wants the Clinton "I feel you pain" hogwash. Bush is giving them inspiration to get out there and get the work done, and the results will be better than you what you had.

Sunny, Christianity has nothing to do with it. I am not the who has been screaming "Bush wanted to kill black people," "Bush blew up the levy" and "this disaster is all the white man's fault," yadda, yadda, yadda... in the press, on TV, on the radio, etc. I stand by my earlier comments:

Tonight the President proclaimed that the government is going to throw hundreds of billions of dollars at the problem and this wealth will just end up in the corrupt hands and control of the politicians and people responsible for the problem to begin with; instead of laying the blame where it rightly belongs and entrusting the reconstruction into the hands of those capable of honestly/faithfully dealing with the problem:

1) Those who willingly and steadfastly refused to leave in spite of the fact they were warned DAYS IN ADVANCE that a category 5 hurricane was heading straight for them.

2) The Mayor of N.O., incompetent mayor Nagin who, during the disaster, never lifted a finger to get the old, poor and disabled out by using the fleets of busses readily at his disposal which now lie under feet of water, useless, like this black mayor who has now set up cushy new digs for himself in Texas.

3 Blanko, the governor of LA; a woman so inept, she failed to take coordinated action and sat on her hands while her state fell apart around her and who, for over 24 hours, could not make up her mind as to accepting or refusing the offer to help from the President of the United States.

These are the people who are to blame; the democratic black mayor and the democratic woman governor; not President Bush and NOT me, my family and the rest of America! However, instead of dealing with the TRUTH and holding those responsible accountable; because the race card has been and is being played, WE are going to be held responsible for the sheer stupidity of others; WE and our children’s children are going to be made to pay, and pay, and pay in order to placate them and rebuild N.O. a city that is surrounded by water and up to 25 feet below sea level! Not only that, the President is going to give the supervision of the BILLIONS of dollars of construction and supervision into the hands of mayor Nagin and govenor Blanko. The result will be; BILLIONS down the toilet.

As mentioned earlier, our church has donated nearly 11k dollars in two weeks. It is not that we do not care, it is just that we want the aid to go where it is needed and to be accepted with some modicum of appreciation.

You say "black faces" and I saw Americans.

They're hardly alone living in those conditions. Their local and state leadership failed them. Their choice to live in that city, a known high flooding and hurricane risk, cost them whatever possessions they had. Possessions are not terribly important but the city should *NOT* be rebuilt in an irrational way with huge taxpayers debt incurred only to have this happen yet again with the city below sea level.

There's massive waste in the federal budget including the transportation bill. Tom DeLay said this week the budget was as lean as possible. Instead we'll be borrowing rather than considering offsets. This isn't fiscal conservatism.

It *is* pathetic that New Orleans has such high poverty, unemployment and so forth. It's a scandal. But it isn't unique. That's replicated across many Democrat urban strongholds. The Feds offered a cut-rate flood insurance program. The AG of Mississippi is suing to force insurance companies to pay out even to those who didn't have flood coverage. So when New Orleans is finished--and hopefully another Katrina won't hit during the multi-year rebuilding effort--when are doing going to reboot another cesspool city? Detroit? Cleveland? D.C.? Philly? Los Angeles?

We should be very careful with the tax payer's money especially that of tax payers that aren't even working age yet. Bush's solution is more give-aways: housing lots, $5000, tax breaks for small businesses targeted (quota?) at minorities. Those are LBJ and Democrat poverty pimp solutions. The pandering comes exactly in his choice of words to link their poverty with racism. What kind of racism could be causing that in a city where over 80% of the citizens are non-white?

New Orleans is dead. We're not going to learn out lesson and move the city. This will happen again and could happen during any hurricane season.

Giving someone a plot of land and house is no way to lift them out of poverty and make them productive citizens rather than criminals, addicts and welfare dependents. Something *major* has to change in the corrupt local government, with the local education system. This is a fantastic opportunity for all of those folks to get a "fresh start" throughout the country.

Early estimates are $300 billion is what Bush's expecting to spend. He's pandering to the romanticism of New Orleans with all this talk of rebuilding the city as it was. It's *shameful* and moronic. If there are no consequences to our choices of where to live, whether to pay for flood insurance, whether to stay in school and so forth why don't we just redistribute all wealth equally so no one has to work anymore unless they really want to.

I'm hoping pressure can be put on Congress so they will reign in the purse strings. It won't happen. Correct or otherwise, I know I'm on the losing end of this argument. Irrationality and a desire to "show we care" has overwhelmed all good and moderating sense.

You're absolutely clueless and throwing a temper tantrum that would make a two year old look intelligent.

You want what YOU want. Helloooooooooooooo...? You aren't the president, you aren't nearly as smart as you think you are, and nobody cares what you want. Got that !

There is no one there to work the port. They have no where to live. There is NO infastructure there (like banks, DMVs, etc

Funny how none of the Cast Iron Conservatives realize how much Fed Tax REVENUE is being lost everyday that area is devastated. Funny how often "Fiscal Conservatives" are are pennywise and pound foolish. It isn't just the 3 states, it is a whole lot of river traffic to and from the whole Midwest. Sitting on our butts doing NOTHING, as the "Fiscal Conservatives" advocate, actually GROWS the deficit because of the reductions in tax income.
