U.S. House backs hate crime measure protecting gays

WASHINGTON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday unexpectedly backed a measure to expand federal hate crime protection to gay people, a measure that House conservatives had blocked for years.

The Senate has passed similar legislation, which also expanded protections for the disabled, several times in recent years but House conservatives had argued that these cases should be dealt with on a local or state level without additional federal intervention.

This time the hate crime measure was attached to a bipartisan bill known as the Children's Safety Act aimed at tightening reporting requirements for child sex offenders. Companion legislation has not yet moved through the Senate, so the ultimate fate of the gay protection provision is uncertain.

Still backers were jubilant.

I was thinking of Foley (FL) not Weldon (FL). Sometimes it's tough to keep them all straight.

ROFL ..... poor Foley ... at least he tries to keep it private. I do appreciate that much. But I don't appreciate his pro-gay votes.

Why did the H. of R. stop there? They went overboard!!

While at it, why didn't they include rapists, murderers, thieves, embezzlers, child molesters, oh, they did include this last one, etc., etc.?

Thanks for this very important ping. Shocking developments indeed. Is this is ploy by Republicans to prepare for the 2006 eletions (post-Katrina)? I hope they understand that they are playing with fire....

JMO, some Pubbies wanted to be on record of voting pro-homosexual.

My contention is that Delay will get this stripped, but those 30 spineless Pubbies will still be on record with their vote, and today's vote gave the liberal editors at reuters an unexpected, for lack of a better term, political orgasm.

I saw it and am pretty ticked off. How about making crimes against green eyed people a crime. Is that where we're headed. Ridiculous.

Too bad our ignorant congress critters didn't spend more time trying to protect our children from the fagots...

I would like to see a law that REQUIRED the Death sentence for anyone that rapes or murders a child ----- of either sex...

That vote was on final passage of the bill. Apparently there was no separate vote on the amendment. They slipped it through with no vote.

.......with some gays it's hard to tell if that's a hate crime or a sex act.

Yes, like when some queer takes sticks and other things and sticks them up a straights A** that is just a sex act. < /sarcasm off >
