John Roberts to Sen. Schumer: 'Dr. Zhivago!'
NewsMax ^ | 9/14/05 | AP

After two days of intense legal questioning, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts finally addressed a subject most Americans could relate to: His favorite movies are "Doctor Zhivago" and "North by Northwest."

Frustrated by Roberts' answers, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., suggested on Wednesday that if he dared to ask the nominee his favorite films, he would get a discussion of cinematography and why "Casablanca" is considered one of the greatest. Instead, Roberts answered flat out, bringing laughter from the audience and senators alike.

"North by Northwest," Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 classic, starred Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason and Martin Landau, and included a death-defying scramble on the face of Mount Rushmore.

"Doctor Zhivago," the 1965 film directed by David Lean, was described as "a love caught in the fire of revolution" and starred Omar Sharif, Julie Christie and Rod Steiger.

He's clearly unfit to serve. A more appropriate answer would have been Bowling for Columbine or Deep Throat.

Schumer must hate being on the losing side of this fight.

"Bambi Meets Godzilla" was the kind of answer Schumer deserved.

He was probably hoping for something like "Birth of a Nation" so he could berate him for racism.

"We've Never Been Licked" (what can I say... I'm a Texas A&M Aggie) and "Patton" are a couple of my favorite flicks.

In both, the bad guys get their a$$es kicked by the good guys.

Jimmy Stewart's "Harvey".

Then Roberts would look to his left and say, "like to go have a beer, Harvey?"

"Joe Biden is flying the cropduster."

When I first read this, I thought it said: "Joe Biden is flying the CRAPDUSTER." Hehehe. Fitting.

>> Clockwork Orange <<

LOL! That would've caused a commotion. I just had an image of Nancy Pelosi being beaten by a giant phallic statue.

I once assinged my 7th-grade General Science class to report on a science fiction book. One kid did, "A Clockwork Orange." I think he was just trying to shock me. The worst thing was... his report was excellent. I gave him an "A," and the next class period off... to visit the school counselor.

(No, I wasn't referring him for being nuts. I just thought some adult discussion about the appropriateness of the material was called for, and, as a first-year teacher, the subject was a bit touchier than I felt like handling.)

When I think of Schumer and the Senate, somehow "ITs a Mad,Mad , Mad , Mad world comes to mind."

They are looking for the "W" and its driving them nuts.

Joe Biden is flying the cropduster.

LOL! Considering the fate of the cropduster, I hope you're right.

Roberts' choice of "North By Northwest" is interesting as it's the story of an innocent man caught up in something bigger than him that he doesn't understand and he's forced to run for his life. The mood of the movie is one of fear, menace and paranoia.

Could the hearings have influenced his selection?

You know, I think you're right. I saw that the other day, and I'm thinking the old chieftain was Omar.

Actually the Hollywood version of Zhivago appears even more awful and shameful after one sees the real thing put together by Masterpiece Theatre.

They (MT) brought the real story out to let everyone know why Pasternak received a Nobel Prize for just that one work. It's awsome and penetrating, even for one who has seem most everything.
