The first three words of The Constitution are 'We The People' they could have easily mentioned a Creator if they wanted to do so. And the idea of a 'more perfect Union' is quintessentially Enlightenment. And btw 'Survival of the Fittest' is Spencer not Darwin.

Me? No. I can't speak for Mr. Newdow, but I do have a good guess as to his take . . .

You're so wrong. By the way, are you aware that Free Republic -- the forum on which you express your views -- is based in California? Like it or not, California is still part of the U.S.A. and together we are all one country. But then, maybe you don't live in the U.S.A.

Fine, go through the usual laundry list of CA slanders, then sort of offer an olive branch.

Your attitude is an example of why we're so far from being united in this country. I don't know how you can miss that several million California residents voted for Bush-Cheney in 2004. We campaigned as hard as any other state for the ticket.

The California border is less of an open door than the borders of Arizona and Texas.

You don't know anything about my birthplace, Los Angeles, so I won't bother talking to you about that.

But, your general attitude of disdain is going to be a roadblock to finding the common ground you speak of. And giving up on any state in the U.S.A. is foolish and fatalistic.

Looks like Chief Justice ROBERTS first case will be about the pledge. If so we will get a fair reading on it.

I have lived my entire life in Indiana, and while we don't agree on CA, I know and realize that there are good people in CA. And yes I know that Free Republic is based in CA, why have you guys not gotten rid of Feinstein, Pelosi, Boxer and the rest of that drivel?

Having lived your entire life in Indiana, you are ignorant of California. I have never been to your state and so I do not know much about it, yet do I seek out what I think is wrong with your state and blame you for it, in addition to trashing the entire state? Do I?

In my opinion, pretty much the entire Senate (Dems and Republicans such as Specter, McCain, Hagel, Hatch, et al) is worthless. Do we then trash all those states and the people in them? That would cover an awful lot of territory. It just seems convenient for lazy minds to unload their latent hostilities on California.

It's time for me to turn my attention to the beautiful things in life rather than trying to deal with the mental pollution of too many posters on FR.

Then too, CA has given us the Michael Jackson verdict, the OJ Simpson verdict, yesterday the banning the Pledge of Alliegence. I know that I sound wacked, but I am just plain tired of them, it, whatever you want to call it. I am sick of how they have just about destroyed the moral fiber of this country. How they spit on our military, our president, the freedoms that they enjoy, because of our military. I am tired of paying way too much in taxes, only to be called greedy, because I think that everyone should get off of their rears and work for it, like I do. I'm tired of the free ride so many are getting. I am the first to donate or help someone out who needs it, I realize that there are people out there that need help, can't do it themselves, but it has gone so far over the edge, I don't see how it can ever get back to where it needs to be. Sorry to rant on, but again, I see CA as basically a losing battle and if they don't like it, they can leave. But you don't see the Baldwins or Streisand or the rest of that loser crowd doing it do you? They are quick to condemn you and I, but they think that they are above it all.

You're a saint. You're self-righteous. You feel sorry for yourself, you place blame. And if only California was wiped off the map, you would be happy and everything would be okay in the U.S.A. California is responsible for all the evil in the world and Indiana is a model of virtue and patriotism.

I do not spit on the military or our President. I support both in a very active way. It's amazing how you persist in flinging out your ignorance.

Eric -

Thanks for your insights, I've enjoyed reading them, and you've inspired me to officially register and begin posting after years of enjoyable lurking.

I take umbrage with your statements about Washington being vague in his beliefs, and Madison being a firm believer in separation.

On Washington, he made his beliefs very well known, from his oath of office to statements leading our soldiers in the War, to declaration before the Convention and so on.

The only fair conclusion that can be reached from reading Washington's statements is that he was a devout Christian.

As for Madison, while he strongly believed that there should never be a national religion, he was certainly not opposed to legislating religious matters at the state level. When you spoke of separation, I would like to know if you meant at the National level, or at every level of government as it is so often used today.

FYI - The Declaration, Bill of Rights and every other Amendment are all dated, but none in the same fashion as the Constitution, invoking the 'Year of our Lord'.

Perhaps they were not viewed as formal documents.{/s}

Are you inferring that using the english translation for AD is always to pay tribute to Jesus Christ? They also referenced July in the date. Were they honoring Julius Caesar?

Jeff,

The point is that the defense that 'Year of our Lord' was the way formal documents were dated is bogus, as evidenced by the dating of equally 'formal' documents of the time(s).

The commonality arguement, however, does hold true for the pagan names of the days of the week, and indicates nothing religious at all.
