In Minnesota there is a small village called Sobieski. It's one of those villages which is more correctly called a hamlet with not much more than a Catholic church called St. Stanislaus plus a local pub and convenience store. Mostly it's a settlement of Polish Catholic farmers in the mid to late 19th century in Morrison county in central Minnesota.

Don't you just love the USA with all it's colorful local history? A veritable pot pouri of people with a gene pool of the very best of Europe - those who chose to better themselves in a land of opportunity and freedom!!!

Sobiesky was the man, no doubt abou it. Not only that he was an accomplished military man, but he was also a very well-read and fluent in many languages. He made it his mission to learn the languages of his neighbors so he could converse with the other kings and leaders without the need of translators. He was definitely one of a kind.

King Sobiesky

The king and his allies kicking major Islamic a$$...

Now let's keep this all in perspective folks: if Islam had won the day, there would be no beer. Imagine a world without beer.

God bless the Poles.

This before Ivan the Terrible time because I think Ivan the Terrible who b***hslap the Muslum tartars back wherever they came from

Please, the Russians wished they had someone like Sobiesky. Even before that it was the Huns (Hungarians' ancestors) and Genghis Khan who decimated the Ottoman ranks and would have the Bayazid (the Islamic Ottoman ruler) in a cage, paraded all over Mongolia. And let's not forget Vlad Tepes aka Vlad The Impaler who got his nickname from impaling all the Ottomans who dared crossing over on Romanian land. We need such men to fight the Islamic scum!

I thought Vlad the impaler stopped islam's spread or was that the first time it rose its ugly head.

You are thinking of the 1444 Varna Campaign Crusade :)

I saw Lele Sobieski on Leno once. She said she was a direct descendant of King Sobieski. She sure is cute - but really stupid.

Geeez! There's similarity I must say. Funny thing when I was in Vienna Sobieski I asked some Viennese about Polish history. - "Sobieski? Sorry, never heard of him." That's what they call gratefulness. But they always had mouth full of accusations of Poland being American lap dog. :)

I googled the name - I noticed the similarity as well. I was surprised. Very disappointed to hear Polish students having forgotten Reagan and their own history.
" lap dogs " ??? Give me a break.

Oh, please, she was just using one of those lame websites (eg: familytree.com or ancestors.com) where they are using famous European names and they make you think you are related to them. They do not use any documents of birth or so on... She is as related to King Sobiesky as I am related to Queen Victoria.

Don't forget that the fight was not fought alone, the Romanians, the Serbians and the Bulgarians were first to suffer by the invading Islam and they continued the fight along with their Christian brethren from Eastern Europe (please note how Western Europe never cared about the struggle knowing full well they had the luxury of not being under much threat while Eastern Europeans were doing the fighting to repel Islam back into its hole).

“Let’s hope this time will be done and finish. Our King Jan III Sobieski wanted to go and kick Ottoman Empire absolutely away from Europe go through Balkans it was vote it against it. King of Austria wanted to have his own glory. After Vienna he decide it not to help our King and Jan was left with no option of it to stop his plans. Mistake by western powers.

“And later they pay us back in partition us that was their thank you to us. I have my take on this; God has help us and stood by us that is most important. You can attack my country you will not kill our soul and we will fight till the end. We will stand up and fight Slavic people should not be underestimated. When we unite we will stand up and fight like crazy.”
