PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: After the President and First Lady attended church in Washington this morning, they participated in a September 11, 2001 rememberance and moment of silence on the White House lawn. GWB then headed for New Orleans where he touched down mid-afternoon. He will be spending the night aboard the USS Iwo Jima, which is docked in New Orleans harbor near downtown.

The President was met by New Orleans Mayor Nagin, but Gov. Kathleen Blanco was not present.

Patriot Day 2005 Proclamation

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Four years have passed since our country was brutally attacked on a quiet September morning. On that day, thousands of innocent lives were taken from us. The victims and the families who lost loved ones remain in the hearts and prayers of our Nation. We also remember the courage of the firefighters, police officers, emergency rescue personnel, and scores of private citizens who showed us the true meaning of heroism and demonstrated our resolve to the world.

The mission that began on September 11, 2001, continues. Today, we see the virtue of the September 11th heroes embodied in our military personnel, who are taking the fight to our enemies and helping to keep us safe at home. Thousands of other Americans, from intelligence analysts to border guards to countless others, are doing vital work to help defend America and prevent future attacks. We are grateful to all of these men and women and to their families for their service and sacrifice. We honor those who have lost their lives defending our freedom, and we pray that God comfort their families. We pledge that we will not rest until we have won the war on terror.

As we mark this solemn anniversary, I call upon all our citizens to express their patriotism and their gratitude for the blessings of liberty. By flying the flag, supporting military families, and teaching young people about our founding ideals, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and since, and we help preserve our freedom for future generations.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107 89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2005, as Patriot Day. I call upon the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half staff on Patriot Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, to display the flag at half staff from their homes on that day, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

I never could have children, and my four dogs are my kids.

Even in the worst disasters, it is rarely necessary to leave one's animals behind. I have two dog steel wire dog crates in my car at all times. Have done this for years since I live in earthquake country. Besides, my two dearly beloved German Wirehaired Pointers went with me pretty much everywhere daily throughout their long lives. Although they are gone now (from life, but not from my heart), my current dogs use the crates when they're in the car. So as long as I can get out in a disaster, my dogs and cat will go too.

I bet it was hard to watch . . . I'm glad they produced it, because I'm afraid people ARE forgetting what we're fighting for, and we need to remember. On the shows I watched this afternoon, they interviewed some of the widows whose husbands had been on that flight, and they talked about their last conversations .. . it was heartbreaking and inspiring all at the same time.

Krauthammer is Kristolizing right before my eyes.

I kind of wondered the other day if both of them are getting ready to push for McCain in 08? It's kind of an off the wall thought but it did occur to me after the critisism of Katrina.

I am a bit POd re: animal rescue situation. Most animals (even a horse the size of my pooch Oliver & NEW POOCH Toby) can sit on lap of owners in rescue boat/copter.

I would NOT leave my pets.

And a well-prepared, well-marbled, rare ribeye right off the grill is the best!

I LOVE COWS--LOL!

I was busy crying my eyes out last night when I was watching the news with a fellow who was reunited with his two dogs (chihuahuas) in NO.

Did you see the story of the man and his little black-and-tan Chihuahua who both survived the storm together? He would not leave his little dog. So he held the dog as the storm surge washed the house out. Then he grabbed a tree, still holding the little dog. Then they floated away together on some debris. He never let go of the little dog.

When he was finally rescued, the dog went with him. He was interviewed sitting at a picnic table, with the dog standing on the table. He has nothing left in the world, but he has his beloved dog.

George W. Bush is able to separate friendship and business. You can be his friend, get a job working for him but he will fire your butt if you don't do that job and show up at your door for dinner as a friend. Larry Lindsay was a good friend of his but he did not hesitate to remove him when he was not satisfied with the job he was doing. President Bush is loyal but you better produce.

Our kennel up here is Michigan has been contact by Louisiana authorities. We are taking in 5 rescued pets to care for until they can be reunited with their owners. They will be arriving early this week.

Such good news, Kath. Eases the sadness in my heart. If the pets can't be reunited for whatever reason, hopefully they will be adopted. Hundreds, if not thousands are being rescued and are being shipped all over the country to temporary care and maybe new homes.

Yes it was nice to see and it looked so natural that it indicates that in private they obviously are a affectionate couple

Oh yes I did see that - that was a wonderful story - that little chihuahua had a face only his owner could love (hehehe).

Believe me my little chi-babies are getting more hugs from me than is the norm at the moment - I would be lost without them!

Do you have any cats? If so, did it take Ricky a while to get used to her/him.

I have one cat named Kitty (what else?). She was born in the crawlspace under the house next door to me about 1993. I used to put food out for her, her mom and the only other littermate I saw. The others disappeared, but Kitty adopted me. She grew up with my dogs, so is not afraid of dogs.

Ricky is afraid of her, LOL. Height-wize, they are about the same size. When she's still on the floor between him and the door to the backyard, he sees her and does an immediate about face. I have to go, pick him up and carry him past the cat to get him out, LOL.

I'm sure they're not complaining, LOL! On the other hand, I'm sure they think it's their due and wonder why you haven't done it before now.

The Noah's Ark story is exactly what comes to my mind when I hear people talk that way. God Himself directed Noah to save animals, when people were going to be destroyed. I packed my four big dogs from here to Texas when I went to my sister's in Texas a few days after the hurricane, because I knew that I couldn't expect the relief effort to spare water and food for animals. Now THAT was an experience, let me tell you-thank goodness for a sister with a fenced-in yard,a big heart, and a high stress threshold:)

the article that Evan Thomas wrote for Newsweek.I was furious when I read that article. It is disgusting. But he may not have any sources at all. He makes one criticism after another, all of them just ad hominem attacks that are just matters of opinion. I suspect he made the whole thing up without talking to anyone except his circle of Bush haters. So there is no use discussing his accusations. Thomas is just calling Bush bad names. It is about as low as you can get.

I can picture you carrying Ricky to "safety". Too funny.

I have a picture of Maddie but it is too large. Do you know how to re-size it when it is in Photobucket?
