I never could have children, and my four dogs are my kids.Even in the worst disasters, it is rarely necessary to leave one's animals behind. I have two dog steel wire dog crates in my car at all times. Have done this for years since I live in earthquake country. Besides, my two dearly beloved German Wirehaired Pointers went with me pretty much everywhere daily throughout their long lives. Although they are gone now (from life, but not from my heart), my current dogs use the crates when they're in the car. So as long as I can get out in a disaster, my dogs and cat will go too.

I agree those who could get out on their own steam should and could take their pets but of course those who were trapped were reliant on the the rescuers allowing them to bring the pets with them.
In one Parish there was shelter already set up but in other cases some of the rescuers would not allow the animals in the choppers yet others did. Again there did not seem to be a constant plan by the local authorities.

My husband and I were talking about our babies too...(3 dogs) I could not and would not leave them behind...hubby says we would have gotten out of there long before we were told to on that Sunday with the babies in the SUV with us.
