Flight 93 Memorial Decried As Islamic Symbol (Red Crescent)

There's a growing outcry that one element of the newly chosen Flight 93 National Memorial represents Islam and is a slap in the face to the passengers and crew members who died on the hijacked plane four years ago. The winning design, announced Wednesday in Washington, D.C., includes what is called the "Crescent of Embrace."

She acknowledges that the crescent has come to represent the religion. But, she continued, it does not hold the same significance, for example, as the cross does to Christianity.

However, the cross has a great significance to everybody. Ever wonder why they don't have the Red Cross in Muslim countries? They have the "Red Crescent."

"Preacher vows fight over Flight 93 memorial design"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "SOMERSET, Pa. - A Somerset County preacher vowed to fight the design of the Flight 93 National Memorial, insisting that the crescent pathway used in the design is a symbol of Islam.

"This is a memorial to the terrorists who killed those people, not a memorial to the folks who died there innocently," said the Rev. Ron McRae, leader of the Bible Anabaptist Church near Jerome, about 55 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

"The crescent is as much connected to Islam as the cross is to Christianity," said McRae of Conemaugh Township, also listed as director and founder on the Web site of the Lancaster-based Street Preachers Fellowship.

McRae said the group may go to court to try to block the "Crescent of Embrace" memorial designed by Paul Murdoch Associates of Los Angeles. The design centers around a mile-long semicircle of red maples surrounding the point of impact, where 40 passengers and crew were killed when the hijacked plane crashed near Shanksville on Sept. 11, 2001.

Though not accepted by all Muslims, the crescent moon and star is an internationally recognized symbol of Islam and appears on the flags of many Muslim nations."

Someone in the article said it would be a monument to the terrorists. He's right. Even if one were to argue that Islam isn't to blame for what happened, it's still what the terrorists were acting in the name of, and putting it there gives encouragement to Islamic terrorists.

Alshehri, Marwan al-Shehhi, Fayez Rashid Ahmed Hassan Al Qadi Banihammad, Ahmed Alghamdi, Hamza Alghamdi, Mohand Alshehri, Hani Hanjour, Nawaf Alhazmi, Majed Moqed, Khalid Almihdhar, Salem Alhazmi, Ziad Samir Jarrah, Saeed Alghamdi, Ahmed Ibrahim A. Al Haznawi and Ahmed Alnami???

Guess he is right...some Muslims did die in the attacks.

Looks like the AP's report is slightly less biased than the Post-Gazette. The AP describes McRae as the "leader of the Bible Anabaptist Church near Jerome, about 55 miles southeast of Pittsburgh." But the P-G disparagingly says that he's "self-proclaimed bishop Ron McRae, a street evangelist based in Somerset County", implying that he's some kind of deranged hobo.

OPINION: MEDIA SLANT when it comes to Christians and Jews these days is very slanted. That's not a good thing and is not professional.

"Last year, our second class of the fall season happened to have been scheduled for 9/11, and so, of course, did not happen. The semester was foreshortened by the attacks on the World Trade Center. For a while the New School buildings served as staging areas for some emergency services. Several students came closer to the carnage than anyone should. Our academic world became more real as we talked about America's arrogant and profligate energy use, which was dramatically embedded in the twin towers, now turned to one big toxic pile of dust. The rubble was burning not far from where we sat. those who will give forms to our physical environment-my twenty-eight hopes for the future of a new design ethic-had a hard time ignoring this fact of their lives. The collapse shows, among other things, that our current American lifestyle is unsustainable."

"If the families of the 40 people who were killed felt this was an appropriate symbol to honor their loved ones, then I think he is delusional," he said. "To take this small-minded, bigoted view is disgusting and repellent."

I fully acknowledge the horrendous grief the families have no doubt suffered and continue to suffer. This, however, isn't solely about them. ALL who love our country took a huge hit on 9/11, not just them. So while I agree that family opinion should be weighted, I don't see their lack of objection as the end-all of the criticism.

I'm not one who tries to read symbolism into everything I see, but the connection here is near impossible to miss and it's grossly inappropriate. I think it's a real stretch to believe this issue didn't come up when this design was being created.
