I saw this, too. I had been thinking today that the NO evacuees were in danger of "jumping the shark" they way some of the 9/11 families did.

I remember Push (a guy who lost his wife on 9/11, wailed on Larry King and other places about how he lost his life when she died and then turned around and remarried before his wife's body was cold) told Feinberg the amount of money he was to be awarded was not sufficient (over a million dollars), and Feinberg told Push to please have a press conference and tell the American people that several million dollars was not enough for him.

The greed and political agenda exhibited by some of the 9/11 families made me lose sympathy for them and I see the same thing happening with the NO evacuees.

I gave $50 the Salvation Army last week and I'm not tempted to open my checkbook again.

Thanks. I wonder if the cards were stolen or obtained by someone who got in line, but wasn't an evacuee?

'They don't look like evacuees' is an interesting statement, but not completely useful. Many of these people are now wearing donated clothes. Who knows how they 'look' now?

"animal rescue group.
Got a link?"

My daughter sent a very generous donation recently, via PayPal, to: http://www.noahswish.org

The reason she selected them is because they've been featured on Fox, MSNBC, and CNN. In fact, this very minute they're interviewing a woman with the group.....very comforting to see and know what they're doing for the animals.

If you don't want to send money, if you click on "How You Can Help," on the left side of their home page, they give you a list of needed items.

Has there been ANY thought to offering the evacuees a chance to volunteer?

The other day, FNC reported that at one of the centers, either the Astrodome or the River Center in Baton Rouge, they had set up tables to register volunteers from among the evacuees. They were looking for people to hand out food, clean up the place, etc.. I've not seen another report as to how successful they were. Somehow I doubt that they got many volunteers. But then, I'm a cynic.

The idiot probably had a Red Cross debit card and didn't know it. The Red Cross cards were good for something between $400 and $1000, depending on how many were in the family. He has a woman with him so $700 would seem about right.

We shouldn't be in the business of compensating people in cash for their misfortunes. That goes for 911 families also. Help should be private donations to organizations only for "relief and relocation". Government should also help with rebuilding the community in coordination with local, state, and federal legally constituted action plans. This type of wholesale grief payments to assuage the guilt we feel because it wasn't us, does harm to the economy of the country as a whole. We need to get a grip. Assistance should be tied to hard work and individual effort, not feeling sorry for people.

So used to entitlement programs he thinks gov "owes" him $20,000. Modern day slavery indeed.

The ones who are "slaves" are us, the taxpayers. We are the ones who are working away only to have having our monies confiscated by the government to support this worthless chump who has probably never worked an honest day in his life and instead has lived like a parasite!

Tapeworms, that's what some of these people are!

The thing that makes me so sad about all of this is that it makes all American's seem like entitlement driven ingrates. I find it humiliating.

And I saw that man shortly after the story of the European woman who sent her life savings to help because she remembered the help we had given her country...a whole 1000 Euros or something along those lines.

This part is making me ill....and angry.

Does anyone know where we can donate to the (IMHO), "Forgotten States" only?

Check some of the faith based charities which are working pretty much unheralded out in the more rural areas.

The people in Alabama and Mississippi are loosing out due to all the hysteria in NO. Does anyone know where we can donate to the (IMHO), "Forgotten States" only?

Haley Barbour started a fund call mississippirecovery.com which'll keep funds donated for MS in MS.

I gotta LOVE your pastor!
Thank you again!

You are truly a blessed reminder of the GOOD in people...and it sounds like you are seeing the same in the "guests" you have there, in your state..
I am so glad to hear such people will be welcome in your state.

Please pass on my thanks to ALL OF TEXAS!
;-)

Not true, my cat tries to bite me all the time. Nasty beast. LOL

I think that the estimates are that the Feds are spending $200,000 per evacuee at this present moment. $20,000 is a pittance compared to this.

I am pretty sure he said something about it being too difficult getting the debit cards from FEMA so they sent him to the Red Cross. My question is do they get cards from FEMA and Red Cross? Also there was a guy who I think was the Secretary of HUD who said that they would be making $26,000 available for all the evacuees to get their lives back on track! This had better be loans, not gifts!
