Be prepared

Well-stocked kits of supplies would not have helped tens of thousands hit squarely by Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaches -- where destruction was utter and irresistible. Nonetheless, have a personal survival plan.

This isn't about survivalist obsessions with Armageddon. This is about just-in-time America's apathy and procrastination -- the expectation you can hop in the car and go to the store anytime you need something.

And if disaster occurs, the government will be Johnny-on-the-spot. After all, that's what you pay taxes for, right?

But the government's best-kept yet most obvious secret is this: If it fouls up (and it will), it doesn't lose business as punishment for its failures. It raises taxes or takes on debt.

Against the backdrop of life as it really is -- as Katrina reminds us -- prepare a disaster plan.

Establish a pantry of staples: canned foods, crackers, dried milk and so forth.

Maintain a supply of potable water. Batteries for flashlights, fuel for kerosene lamps and heaters. A battery-operated radio. A generator if you can afford it -- for the refrigerator, at least.

Have basic medicines, vitamins and first-aid supplies. Clothing for inclement weather. Rotate your stash to keep things fresh.

Give thought to an evacuation route and what you would take along.

Bad things do happen to good people. Worse things may happen to those unprepared.

We live in the Chicago area. We have floods from the winter thaws or pouring rain. You can purchase a cellphone back up system. You wind up your cell. I'm interested to see how it works. Won't help if we have a tornados. Towers might be down.

Aesop's old fable

The Ant and the Grasshopper

In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.

"Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of working so hard?"

"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same."
"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; "we have plenty of food right now."

But the Ant went on its way and continued its work.

When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing, every day, corn from the stores they had collected in the summer.

Then the Grasshopper knew:

It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.

Time out! I reread your reply and agree on so many points that I must apologise. Your response, tho full of invective, gave every indication of a trully caring thoughtful adult. It was full of what I had been missing from all those rugged individuals who wrote off the refugees as unworthy of commiseration. Thank you for your decency. For a moment one might have thought we were anywhere but in the USA before you wieghed in.

Well "Doc" K:
Changing one's mind is a mental disorder? Lacking your vast experience, you might be right. Then again, reminding myself of your quick diagnoses and hipshooting negative commentary on anything that moves, I wonder.
Harmony being today's word, I'll refrain from further comment except to send you wishes a happy day.

False optimism and hope springs eternal for some, if you ever find yourself in harms way, good luck, you are going to need it..

One guy was saying that his mom went through some earlier hurricane and remembered the stories of people trapped in the attics. He had an old axe in his attic. He made it sound like lots of the people that had memories or heard the stories also did.

It should have been a simple matter to predict, early on, the exact elevation to which the waters would rise. If people had taken the precaution of knowing the elevation of their attic, they'd know whether to go up there because it wouldn't flood, or to go somewhere else because it would.

He's a New Ager idealist with no connection to reality. I know because I once dwelt in that land. He's projecting big time.

Part of my distant family farmed the rich flood silt along the river in Missouri. I used to play in my great-grandparents' attic bedroom next to an alum puddle boat with tarp wrapped breakout tools and "a box" that I was never to touch - Granpa Mac did not have to explain the cost of meddling.

In my dreams, I now keep a 502 cid airboat next to the frenchdoors.

Puddle boats and canoes sales will likely jump like fireman's axes.

You can't be too prepared or ready for something unexpected...

http://www.areyouprepared.com

looks like they have a nice selection of kits and supplies... but GOOGLE returned a load of pages when queried with survival kits...

I noticed that the pc idiot who wrote the article left off some of the most important things. Guns, ammo and the skill to use them to defend yourself from the roving gangs of thugs both in and out of the government.

Much to my consternation, discovered our evacuation routes can flood during heavy rains! VDOT needs to re-examine this issue and give us alternate routes.

And if do have a gun, the Nazis will just steal it from you.

In times like that, it's best to consider the Warsaw approach, and to contemplate the true meaning of the second amendment.

After 9-11 we created a 'bug-out' kit in case we needed to leave home quickly. We've kinda let it slide over the last couple of years. I think we need to refresh it.
