Think local officials are less to blame for deaths in New Orleans than federal officials? In the most jaw-dropping story of the week, UPI has the police chief of Gretna, Louisiana, admitting that he closed off one of the major arteries out of New Orleans on Monday, before the storm hit:
"We shut down the bridge," Arthur Lawson, chief of the City of Gretna Police Department, confirmed to United Press International, adding that his jurisdiction had been "a closed and secure location" since before the storm hit.
"All our people had evacuated and we locked the city down," he said. The bridge in question -- the Crescent City Connection -- is the major artery heading west out of New Orleans across the Mississippi River.
He added that the small town, which he called "a bedroom community" for the city of New Orleans, would have been overwhelmed by the influx. "There was no food, water or shelter" in Gretna City, Lawson said. "We did not have the wherewithal to deal with these people. If we had opened the bridge, our city would have looked like New Orleans does now: looted, burned and pillaged."

Someone being disgustingly insulting towards certain skin colors, color of skin irrelevant as racism is racism no matter who the perp is, should get the boot catapult treatment.

What's the racial make up of the police force, city council, etc.? You cannot gauge the intent of the police force merely by the population.
Besides, whatever the motivation, they were wrong. It doesn't take away from the truly disgusting action of closing the bridge to people trying to survive.
Mike just remember most likely these would probably be the same folk who would burn a cross in your yard. Don't allow them to run you away from the net. All they have is an opinion and if you allow them to shut down your opinion in this forum only their stupidity will stand.
I haven't followed all the threads. It was disappointing reading on a particular thread where the posters were giving reasons of why the evacuees would not be welcomed in their neighborhoods. I let it pass and went on to another thread.
Some folk are just not worth arguing or debating with. As far as justification goes you don't have to justify anything. It would be great though to see on MSNBC, FOX or CNN more programming with black conservatives with talk shows or commentary shows. After awhile there's only so much white commentators can say especially concerning the current issues of black America, the Democrats and their dereliction of their duties concerning black America.
I hope to see you on tv at some point maybe with your own commentary/current events program. It could happen you know?

I saw an interview of a couple of graying hippie types (white folks) today. There was a prominant red peace symbol on the wall, and they had peace symbols buttons on. (I was wondering wow - these guys must all stick together if they are having an interview from a friend's home that has a piece symbol on the wall. I guess it makes more sense if they were out of town and now back in their own home.)
They were saying how the sheriff kept them off the bridge and fired shots in the air. later after things had quieted down they asked the sheriff why they couldn't come over. He said something like "We don't want the superdome over here".
The bridge they showed on the tv map was to the south-southeast over the Mississippi from N.O. Wouldn't this take people closer to the ocena's coast and even further away from inland areas?
Have you actually taken a vote? Or are you listening disproportionately to those that frustrate you most?
There will always be jerks in any large crowd. You shouldn't be expected to stand against them alone, but just because they are there does not mean that they represent the group or are a measure of your value.
Also remember, that some of these people aren't used to seeing black people that are separate from the plantation, so they assume all of us are like those plantation blacks that expect money from the government for being willingly inept. They also assume that we're thugs, because that's all they saw.
Those are fallacious assumptions, but again, they're not used to seeing people like you, me, and others on this board. Mike, you have cajones the size of asteroids. Let's not see them go to waste.
