Rev. Ruben Diaz, who also serves as Democrat state senator representing The Bronx, took scores of fellow NYC Hispanic clergymen to Washington today, where they held a rally to back John Roberts for Chief Justice. Squirm Hillary! Squirm Chuck! Viva Diaz! Heres the text of the good NY Dem Senators statement:
Statement in Support of Judge John Roberts
Washington, DC, Thursday, September 8, 2005
My name is Reverend Ruben Diaz. I am a New York State Senator - a Democrat -- representing the 32nd Senatorial District in The Bronx. I am also a Pastor and the President of the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization.
Today, I am here, together with 150 members of the New York Hispanic Evangelical Community to let our legislators, the Hon. Senator Charles Schumer and the Hon. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, know that these members of the Clergy are here representing thousands of members of New Yorks Hispanic Community who support the nomination of Judge John Roberts as Chief Justice to the US Supreme Court, and to ask for fair Senate confirmation hearings.
First: We strongly support President Bushs nomination of Judge John Roberts to fill the vacancy left by the late Chief Justice William Renhquist.
Second: Judge Roberts judicial background, his knowledge of the law, his humility, integrity, and his vast experience make him highly qualified for this position.
Third: The United States Constitution, in Article 1, Clause 3, states: No Religious test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.
Fourth: During the Senate Confirmation Hearings, Judge Roberts should not be asked or forced to answer any questions that will make him prejudge any cases that may come before the Supreme Court.
Fifth: Judge Roberts should be given the same fair treatment that was offered to Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg during her Senate confirmation hearings in 1994, and he should not be treated as was the Honorable Miguel Estrada and other well-qualified Bush nominees.
In other words, "We are sick of you declaring war on Religion and Morality."
Diaz also said that they failed to speak up for Miguel Estrada and that they would never be silent again...I think it's a Catholic thing for Hispanics.
Diaz is a Protestant.
It's fixed. Thanks for the input.
Thanks for fixing the title :)
This was a true grassroots uprising based on strongly held personal views, not a professionally organized economic special interest group.
This is evidence that conservative Hispanics all over the country are probably coming to the same conclusions and turning to the Republican party.
This type thing snowballs.
Dem politcs in NYC is Byzantine at best, and in the Bronx, very bizarre..it's all very ethnic, and the Hispanics are now attemtign to push the black politicians out of thier power bases...Another example..in the Dem primary next week, for the office of Manhattan borough president..a totally useless job..there are ELEVEN Dems running for the job in the primary, and their is no provision for a runoff..so, someone could win with 15% of the vote...
I second your sentiment. The snide comments here are about as meaningless and obtues as a Pelosi statement. This man and the 150 other pastors/leaders represent hundreds, possibly thousands, of NY votes. They are making it known that they have had it with Chuckie and his lambasting conservative judges. They also said (on Fox) they were silent on the way Estrada was treated, but they will not be silent again.
It may not be a very big shot, but it IS a shot across the bow of Chuckie's boat. I'm glad it got media coverage--just wish CNN et al could be honest enough to publicize it.
vaudine
I think it's a nice gesture, and I think he's going to be important in getting those in his district to vote Republican in the next elections. :o)
Are the DUmmies calling them white Republicans yet?
For what it's worth, I think it's a good thing when people speak up for a good cause. The USA will be better off when (or if) Democrats decide to compete on the bases of performance and integrity rather than complaining and obstruction. Small steps in the right direction should be met with encouragement.
I did. It's worthless. When the Rev. replaces Clinton or Schumer we can start talking abound framing the debate in the meantime get real.
Diaz is a DINO who usually supports Republicans. He's one of the few politicians in NYC who stands up for Christian values.
