A lot of people are beginning to say that the whole "Geraldo rescues woman" story wasn't what it seems. One of them is Alessandra Stanley at The New York Times. She reports that Rivera "nudged" an Air Force worker out of the way so he could be shown on camera helping a woman in a wheelchair. But Rivera went on The O'Reilly Factor and showed videotape that proved that's not what happened. The NYT has not issued a retraction, and Rivera might sue.
Meanwhile, Stephen Elliott over at Salon says that Rivera made the rescued woman walk from the FOX news van to the heliport twice, so they could get the better shot for the camera. This hasn't been confirmed either.
What do you think? Are people being unfair to Geraldo in this situation?
Ya got that right sheik.
I haven't seen you around in a while.
BTTT
Geraldo should challenge Sulzberger to a fistfight at the NYAC.
Well, yesterday we had a guy show up with the handle of "Dubya Fluffer".

Similar enough to make me suspicious.
For Geraldo to win, he must prove 1) That the NY Times report is false and 2) That when they printed it they either knew it was false or they had a reckless disregard for the truth. Geraldo is a "public person", meaning that there is a much higher standard for him to prove slander. I don't think he can win on that score, though the Times could get itself in hot water if it now knows the truth and continues to print a slanderous story.
Interesting screen name.....
Well, he was here yesterday.
Are the kitties awake yet?
You actually aren't asking the question right, it should be in two parts:
Q1) is the NYT telling the truth in their attack on Geraldo?
A1) no (duh!)
Q2) are the attacks on Geraldo unfair?
A2) hell no!
I have personal animosity for "Jerry Rivers" dating back to 1973 when he stiffed my senior class at Scarsdale High School, in New York, for our Senior Class Breakfast. We had paid him $2,000 to be our featured speaker at this kick off for the Senior Class events and he bailed on us and sent some Bella Abzug looking feminazi tramp as a sub (they kept the money). I have never bought his act since then.
This is the second time I've mentioned Scarsdale High on a thread tonight. On the thread discussing the possibility of Mara Liason having had a "touch up" I mentioned that she was a classmate, 1969 to 1973 (if I remember right she was one of the folks who arranged for Jerry to come).
Did you know that Geraldo's claim to fame as a young New York City local TV reporter was an expose of the truly awful conditions in New Yorks mental institutions? It was a masterful example of early investigative reporting, particularly good use of the propoganda power of TV images. The results, of course, were to close the majority of New York mental institutions, resulting in the creation of the homeless problem we still suffer with today.
Well done, Jerry Rivers!
Geraldo and a safe. Anyone know why anyone listens to him.
Apparently, yes.
They were waiting for me to look away.
And when I looked back, poof.
Well, which are you going to believe, the NY Times or or lyin' eyes? :=)
I have a question for any and all well read Freepers.
I once heard that Geraldo's real name is David Rivers..is this true?
--------------------
I actually boxed in one of his corporate events in 78 or 79. It gave me a whole new respect for anyone who ever stepped into the ring.
I am aware of his history and limitations as a reporter and human being, but as he may be in a position to beat up the NYTimes and possibly Salon Magazine, I am willing to see the merits of his situation..
Who are we supposed to believe, the New York Times or our lying eyes?
It is Jerry Rivers.
He stated that the reason Mayor Nagin didn't use the school buses is that the other towns in Louisiana wouldn't take the poor blacks from NO.
He went on to say that if something happened in Harlem in NY and the people had to be bused out, no other town in NY would take them either.
IMHO, that is criminal.
When a caller from Baton Rouge took issue with that comment, Sean pretended he didn't hear Geraldo say that.. Geraldo's rant went on for a few minutes and Sean heard it, he surely did.
Thanks
