Yea.
They have had freebies their whole lives. Makes sense.
We are giving them free food, shelter, clothes and medicine now, just like we have their whole lives, but crap, why not throw $2000 on top of free everything else.
Buy them all a Humvee. Buy them a home in some ritzy suburb.
Yea. Do that.
Buy Mayor Nagin a school bus so he can convert it into an RV.
Now everybody else get back to work. You need to go break your back and earn some more tax dollars so you can give this $2000 away.
It's Friday, call your boss and see if you can work Saturdays and Sundays for the next month so you can cough up the $2000.00 portion of your tax dollars.
Yea. Do that.

>>>>So if you are self-relant, smart enough to get out of Dodge and stay with relatives, etc., or even pay for hotel space far away from the path, then you're SOL?
Probably not, I suspect this is just the first phase of the great vote buyoff - or disaster aid, as I guess the kids call it these days. Regardless, you couldn't pay me enough to have spent those days stuck in the superdome, so I'd gradly lose the 2K to have been self reliant and smart enough to have gotten out early.

What a precedent this sets! The gov better be ready to do this after every hurricane landfall -- and Ophelia just might be next in a big way.

heres going to be a shortage of booze and cigarettes. And interminable lines at convenience stores as overworked clerks handle the crush of daily numbers players.
"Gimme 2201, straight and box. 2202, straight and box. 2203, straight only...4562, box pairs. 4563, box pairs. And six $10 scratch-offs. No, not those. The other ones, the Christmas in September ones. Oh yeah, you right. I already hit big on them. What else you got?"

I demand I get $2000 from Hurricanes Frances, Charlie and Jeanne.
I have construction workers in my home now as I keyboard this post. The insurance covered $13,000, FEMA covered ZERO I am covering the other $92,000.
In fact, better give me a couple cards.
Better give all the Floridians a $2000 card.
Hell, give every African $2000 on top the $15 billion.
Yea man. Do that.

Incredible. I can only wonder what would be different if the White House and both houses of Congress weren't controlled by conservatives...
The principal author of the Constitution, James Madison, certainly thought that this "general welfare clause" allowed the expenditure of federal funds only for purposes specifically described and outlined. This includes the power to coin money, establish rules for naturalization, regulate interstate commerce, conduct a census, establish post offices, support the military, establish copyright laws and a few other purposes.
Economist and columnist Walter Williams points out that other presidents vetoed "humanitarian" bills, finding no allowance for them in the Constitution. In 1854, President Franklin Pierce vetoed a bill to provide monies for the mentally ill: "I cannot find any authority in the Constitution for public charity. ... [It] would be contrary to the letter and the spirit of the Constitution and subversive to the whole theory upon which the Union of these States is founded." In 1887, President Grover Cleveland vetoed an appropriation to help drought-stricken Texas counties, saying, "I feel obliged to withhold my approval of the plan to indulge in benevolent and charitable sentiment through the appropriation of public funds ... I find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution."
Now, they're talking $150 billion for relief and recovery. That's $500 from every man, woman and child in the U.(S.)S.A.
