BREAKING: Tropic depression # 18, now some 1500 miles in the mid-Atlantic, may possibly grow to a Cat 5 and impact the Eastern seaboard of the US. The Black Caucus us demanding that the Federal goverment immediately evacuate every resident of the coastal US, from Texas to Maine, to a point west of the Missouri River, and also that they give each evacuee their $2000 debit card in advance of the move..
This is just the start. Wait until we get to the point where you are forced to work at the point of a gun because of your skills and abilities, while the lazy and lame sleep.
so are they paying the people that evacuated on their own also? Hope so.
I'm sorry about your loss. However, I think the point of this griping is that the people getting this money are people who haven't earned what they had to begin with. Everyone has to prepare for catastrophic events- even here in Massachusetts. The homes that many of these people lived in were paid for by us taxpayers, as well as the food, health care, education, etc.
It is not the government's job to distribute my money to others. Leave that up to me. President Bush has really stepped over the line of true compassion. Now, I have to divert money from my son's future to someone else's. How is that charitable?
Another point is that there are charities already taking care of these people. Why do we need to inundate them with money? Another FReeper suggested getting them jobs- that is the best idea I've heard. Nothing more valuable than self worth.

The "rich" simply had to earn, again, what was taken from them in taxes and the likes of those kind and poor starving people with TVs and boxes of shoes....
So is this going to set a precedent now for every natural disaster that comes our way? What about all the folks who have lost homes due to tornadoes and have been displaced? Tornadoes are much more unpredictable than hurricanes!
Aid programs should be recipient based. Give them a choice of whats possible. The individual will choose whats best for themselves.
$2,000 is chump change compared to the $9,000 toilet seats the gov usually pays for.

I'm curious about the statement that a lot of people can't afford insurance at the same time you say $2,000 is not a lot of money. Which is it? If $2,000 isn't a lot of money, then insurance premiums shouldn't be too much.
This is a bad idea from the start and will only offer the irresponsible another opportunity for irresponsibility.

There should NEVER be handouts from the government-Regardless of the situation.
It should clearly state in the constitution that no one has the right to money from the government for anything other than a good or service.
What is also different is the SD man is (presumably) using his own (or a private charity's) funds. This is a big difference.

Those who took responsibility for themselves, and bore the expense for getting themselves out will get squat.
Those who relied on government to take care of them get a payday.

If you want to live in New Orleans for a day or so and march around in that filthy water and get flown all over the country, eat MREs, sleep on cots with tens of thousands of others for $2000 debit card, be my guest.
I would rather do this then spend $4000 to audit every expenditure or $5000 to have the government make the purchases and distribute the goods. To say nothing of how long these people would have to wait for the government to buy what they need. Come on folks. Would you want to rely on the government to decide what you want and need. One size fits all.
Sure, it's monitored. This is very similar to the cards which are now used to distribute other benefits, such as food stamps (which I had to research in my previous job) and those benefits have restrictions on purchases such as tobacco and alcohol.
Good point about the chump change, but at least the toilet seat is something that can be used for years and doesn't continue to have to be paid for....
I agree that ALL aid should be recipient based and judged by those who are doing the paying.
