I wonder what the tax status of receiving these cards will be

I'm sure the IRS will have some type of program going for those affected by the Hurricane. They did for all those affected by 911.

The cards are not just for the people of NOLA, but those in MS and AL as well.

Frankly, given what most Congressmen make in a single year for basically making our country worse off, these people are getting ripped off.

Most FReepers realize that this is not a "handout" like welfare. This is more like a very bad deal for the refugees: "In exchange for your home, your property, all the equity in your house, your job, and all your belongings, you get $2000 to spend ANY way you want!"

It would be nice to single out the looters and the crack dealers and tell them they're SOL, but the clear majority of people displaced by Katrina are hard-working, honest citizens. My concern is that the families who've lost spouses will get shortchanged in the process.

You mean white people get money for not preparing and not having insurance too? We truly are a colorblind society...

.....The unprecedented cash card program .....

This phrase is potentially misleading in that it is not totally true.

The payment program has precedent. The cash card is new.

Previously vouchers were given and they were cumbersome and merchants didn't like them. The cash card is simple and streamlined way to disberse and spend cash. Paper is gone and the palstic is cash.

The fraud will be rampant with debit cards. Mark my words.

My fellow poster asked, "what would Jesus do?" He would not go to Caesar (government) for help. More likely His equivalent of "the Salvation Army" or other charity organization. JMO

Let go of our wallets first. We give enough privately. Mommy Government don't need to be flappin' her teats around to the irresponsible.

There is no anger directed at you. For a week we were shown pictures of able bodied men wandering about instead of helping their fellow human beings. Watching the looting and fires did not help. This must be a horrible time for you but you and your family will pull through. God speed. You have the country's support.

"It is also an extremely efficient distribution of aid to people displaced, and reduces the time that they are dependent on the government to procure everything from toothpaste to toilet paper.

I can't speak for how it's working in Houston, but at the shelter here all of the needs of the people are being met with donated items. Evacuees who are not being housed at the shelter are also able to register at the shelter and have full access to anything they need, ranging from food, to toiletries and personal items.

Were you expecting these people to get no federal assistance? $2000 per adult seems like a bargain for the federal gov't.

Not everyone can afford insurance, and $2,000 is not a lot of money anyway. A lot of tax money is going to be spent on the recovery no matter how you slice it, and those who are responsible people will use the money to rebuild their lives, and those who won't will use the money to boost the local economy of Houston by wasting it on expensive items. So long as it doesn't become a monthly payment, it is not a big deal.

Let's see: They got their lives saved at other's risk even though they didn't follow direction; They're getting housed and fed and clothed indefinitely; they're getting plenty of private aid despite being irresponsible and making a bad situation worse by their inaction. I'd say my taxed have done more than enough.

Fine. That's a quote. What perception do you take from it? Exactly what are you choosing to read into it, and why?

At this moment, you appear to be as bad as the leftist race-baiters who claim the Feds aren't doing all they could or should because a great many of the NO refugees are black. This is their chance to point the finger at other people and call them racists. You? Well, it seems you, too, like to pump yourself up by calling others racists. If that's the case, then you won't have anything to do with hearing how you might be wrong. After all, the more people you can call racists, the more non-racist it makes you look and, by golly, that's what matters. You want (need?) to feel good about yourself and you want (need?) everybody to know (or at least think) you're so colorblind, you're not afraid to call a racist a racist!

So, if that's the way it is, what follows has no chance of convincing you I'm no more racist than you are.

If you were to go back and read EXACTLY what it was that biblewonk wrote, and if you can put away your race-baiting blinders, you should be able to see how you wouldn't have to read racism into my comments, if you didn't want to.

Here, I'll help:

Hurricane Katrina: The ‘K’ stands for ‘Klan’
biblewonk: Rescue people that think that all the way to Africa.
newgeezer: I'd be willing to send them halfway. Then, they're on their own (for once).
You see, context is everything. People (of any color) who think the 'K' stands for 'Klan' can go to Africa, because they're the ones playing the race card. Logical, no?

So, unless you really are a race-baiter (subconscious, perhaps?), now would be a good time to apologize for the false accusation.

Otherwise, (pardon me while I invoke the vernacular FReepers often direct at race-baiters) STFU. Surely you can find someone even more worthy of your accusatory Racist finger.

Liberalism is about equality of misery. There is no talk of raising these people up to a higher level. Just throw them some cash to make the feelings of guilt go away. And these people still have no clue how to make their own lives better. Is that all a civilized country can really do? I don't think so.

I feel you 100%. I'm originally from Louisiana, and have alot of family still there (Baton Rouge area). And I would like to apologize for all these people who like to generalize and lump all the hurricane victims into one category based on images theyve seen on TV. No doubt the number of good people outweighs the bad, but that doesn't sell in the media world. And here the same FReepers who curse the media are buying into the hype it's creating. I seem to remember a certain BOOK in which a certain SOMEONE said he would spare an entire city, even if there were only a handful of good people left in it. Well, I know the people of New Orleans, and they are good people (except during Mardi Gras! joking!). So I say "bravo" for the debit cards. And "bravo" MoefromMs!

biblewonk is a Catholic-hating racist from the south posing as a "Christian". Gee, what does that sound like? Or do they not walk around in bedsheets these days?
