I'm a victim of Katrina, too. In a way, aren't we all? $2,000 debit cards for the Louisiana victims, $2,000 tax credit for everyone else!! What do you say??!!??

I'll say it again. I have no problem with all of us helping, in fact I encourage it and am doing it myself. I do have a problem though with people expecting the government to dole out money though. It has nothing to do with me not wanting to help others. That's the problem with the nanny state today - anyone who opposes it is automatically accused of "not caring".

Hey TR,
It will depend on who is monitoring the line and issuing the debit cards.

The intentions are good, but this will be taken advantage of by the welfare cheats.

It takes a democratic liberal village to raise anarchists,

I agree with your post, I'm sorry you lost food, but you have your life. God helps those that help themselves and the people in NO are NOT helping themselves, at all, period. Many blessing to you and your family, best wishes to all of you.

Look people, y'all have been predicting massive violence and chaos in Houston due to the influx of refugees.

It didn't happen.

Now you're b!itching because the Feds are trying to get people out of the refugee centers and back into the private sector, renting apartments, buying homes, purchasing food and clothing and generally living as normal a life as could be had under these circumstances.

Would you rather that we kept them in the Astrodome until sometime next year?

Y'all have become a tough crowd lately, and I ask you to back off until we finish working out the details of integrating these people into Texas life and culture.

Many of these people are getting jobs as the business community has bent over backwards to accomodate their needs and this will continue for some time.

Well, hey, at least their getting the process of taking tax money from the rich to give to the poor more efficient now. Quit beating around the bush and just give it to 'em!

All i was trying to say is like or not, the government does take our money, and they do "dole" it out, so they might as well give it to Americans who do need it right now instead of, oh let's see, terrorists in Gaza?

you are right about that. As long as I have my life, I can always get more food. I can't tell you how grateful I am that I still have a home!

And besides which, Congress had no authority to compensate the victims of 9/11. Not in the Article 1, section 8 of my constitution.

I don't know why people here are assuming everyone in the Astrodome was on public assistance. Most of them are probably just poor, with no savings, and have now lost their jobs. With $2000 they could look for a job and get out of the Astrodome by making a deposit on an apartment. The more able will probably be out of there quickly and it will be a terrific example to the others to show similar initiative. The dysfunctional, well, they would be that way no matter where they end up.

These are the same people not capable of "choosing" to get out of the way of a hurricane...

I don't want my hard earned tax money to be given away like that. Oh, wait- it already is. Scratch that.

Maybe some of us don't want them integrated into the Texas community just quite yet. That may well be because we are not familiar with the process, but I think the people in the Dome are more likely to be offerred jobs before those that have integrated. Also out-of-state offers may come in and those that haven't put down a year's deposit on a lease are more likely to travel out-of-state.

Call me hard-hearted, I am growing that way quickly. I simply don't want to see my home state bankrupted because of it's kindness.

I also think that giving the Dome people 2K is not going to have the desired effect. Many of those people do not want to leave the Dome. The ones that do not are not going to spend the money on a place to live. Since this is the goal, why wasn't it offerred as an incentive to GTFO of the dome?

Who will they want to monitor the spending? President Bush? It will be his fault anyway when the liberals start complaining that no one "instructed" these people "how" to use the card responsibly. Then....we'll have to give out more cards.

Sounds a bit like the USDA Food Stamp program, more than the WIC Women/Infants/Children program, eh?

I've known people who sold their USDA paper food stamps at a discount, for cash to buy tobacco and booze.

I've witnessed a healthy male buy LOBSTER TAILS on USDA food stamps and then buy premium brandy with cash. Hot date, you know.

I've seen no assurance that the EBT cards have provided any development of personal responsibility and they are routinely abused, without accountability, for luxury items.

The WIC program at least stipulates staple food items.

This $2K Katrina freebie will surely be fraught with fraud and double-dippers. But there are many decent, hardworking people who need help right now.... So we take care of people, both the weeds and the tares, until harvest time....at the voting booth? It's only money....

And if they can't get on the same line twice, they could always go "shelter hopping"...

I agree about the capitalist spending his own money. If there are any true capitalists there, they are most likely already working to "earn" their own way again. The first and last in line for these cards won't be true capitalists and won't be proud of themselves- at all. The government has, once again, stolen the incentive to do well and prepare for all of life's unexpected events.
