Public Skeptical New Orleans Will Recover Criticism, but little outrage, for Bush's and federal agencies' response to hurricane

Despite widespread criticism of the response by Bush and, separately, the federal government, to the problems caused by the hurricane, the public seems on balance only mildly critical. Forty-two percent say Bush did a "bad" (18%) or "terrible" (24%) job, but 35% rate his response as either "great" (10%) or "good" (25%).

When asked to identify who was most responsible for the problems in New Orleans after the hurricane, 38% of Americans said no one was really to blame, while 13% cited Bush, 18% the federal agencies, and 25% state and local officials.

Few Americans feel that any top official in the agencies responsible for handling emergencies should be dismissed from office -- just 29% say someone should be fired, while 63% disagree.

LA politicians continuing to prove to the world how incompetant they are. I urge them to continue. The more this goes on, the more disgust grows at state/local. Maybe their own citizens, those that actually return, will finally cast them all out and elect GOOD competant leaders...and recall the rest.
And, yes, all this help we're giving while in the midst of their race bait gutter politics. Who comes out good in this?

It seems that the only way we can get through to the liberal news media is to first shame them into reporting the obvious lack of evacuation and then leave such posts scattered around so, if they trip over them while lurking, the facts and sources have already been spoon-fed to them.
You did a great job with your "Louisiana Evac Plan / satellite photos" posts this weekend.
The news media call themselves "professionals" but their almost total lack of reporting of the abandonment of 200,000 people in a storm surge zone has demonstrated the liberal media to be either shameless political partisans or simply people who cannot investigate their way out of a wet paper bag.
Those 200,000 people should never have been in New Orleans in the first place when Katrina struck.
You don't leave 200,000 people in the path of a storm surge any more than you leave 200,000 people in the path of a forest fire.
At the suggestion of writer Michelle Malkin last Friday, I have cobbled together a blogsite called Texas Clearinghouse for Katrina Aid to serve as a clearinghouse for refugee efforts in Texas.
Texas is getting more refugees than any other state -- that's fine, we'll take them all -- but we need help providing them with food, clothing, and shelter.
If you are a refugee, you can information that will help you find relief. If you want to donate or volunteer, you can find someone who needs you.
Right now the site mostly covers Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas but I will add various churches, schools, and other charities in Lubbock and Austin tonight. My wife was down at Reunion Arena in Dallas yesterday handing out care packages and spiritually ministering to the refugees as a representative of her employer. She says that the situation is tragic and that there's a lot of work to be done. There are so many children who don't know where their parents are or even if their parents are still alive.
There are a lot of churches and other organizations in Texas that need help in dealing with the problem and I would appreciate it if you would get the word out.

That's right, they were bussed to the Superdome. As you may recall, the state also provided National Guard troops to pat people down for weapons (from the stories we've heard, they missed a few, but that's another topic...)
As was also reported on the 28th, Mayor Nagin "... said people who opted to go to the Superdome should come with enough food and supplies to last three to five days. He police and firefighters would fan out throughout the city telling residents to get out. He also said police would have the authority to commander any vehicle or building that could be used for evacuation or shelter."
All this is not to defend Nagin, nor to suggest that his plan was a good one. But there is another important point that many people seem to be missing completely. During those first few days after the levees gave way, resources were focused on cutting drowning people out of their attics and plucking them from swamped rooftops. Hundreds of people in immediate danger of losing their lives needed to be saved, and the NOPD (such as it is...) was trying to stop the animal element, by that time running amok in the city.
Further, the evacuation of the Superdome began on Wednesday, August 31st, as reported on CNN and elsewhere. While evacuation of the convention center did not begin until Saturday (the 3d), most of those who took shelter there arrived later, also.
When Brown or Cherthoff say that "they didn't know about the people" at these two shelters, don't be too quick (Bill O'Reilly) to laugh and suggest that they ought to watch the TV. Yes, we all knew there were people at these places. But, while a herculean effort was well underway to drop supplies to the stranded throughout the Gulf Coast, and to rescue the thousands in immediate jeopardy, these missions had one immediate goal: to get those poor people to a shelter. The fact is, the people at the convention center and Superdome were already in shelters at the direction of state and local government. It would be an outrageous waste of resources for the Federal government to unilaterally inspect, commandeer and evacuate shelters when there are other clear and immediate priorities. They have to assume that shelters are already under control.
As reported by the AP on the 31st (Wednesday):
Under the national response plan, which was finalized in January, the federal government intervenes only when emergencies exceed what state and local capabilities can handle. Though state and local officials have not formally declared that they can no longer manage the disaster on their own, that is the case, said Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke."
In other words, not only had the locals not asked for Federal intervention, the White House had clearly recognized they ought to.

Of course, that's not counting for a Jamie Gorelick on the commission. Never mind, the truth will come out, ala Able Danger. Better late than never.
