A landmark bill to legalize gay marriage passed the Assembly by a single vote Tuesday and now goes to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has not said whether he will sign it.
The measure passed on a 41-to-35 votes, with no support from Republicans. The author of the bill, Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, worked desperately throughout the day to find the votes needed for passage.
The Senate approved AB849 last week, marking the first time a legislative body in the country to approve a bill legalizing same-sex marriage. But supporters had a harder time mustering support in the Assembly, where the bill had already failed once this year, falling four votes short.

I guess CA is jealous that God gave so much attention to New Orleans.
All they're doing is setting up their own defeat for the next 2 to 4 years at least.

If Schwarzenegger has three brain cells to rub together, he will veto this the right way, reversing his drastic collapse in public polls and paving the way to some chance of success in this fall's referenda and next year's election.
They disregarded the will of the people of California in a State wide referendum. The dumocrats pay no attention to what the people wan't. They just go ahead and play the game of dictators, and will find a willing court to back them up. And the slippery slope continues.
Hey, San Francisco, can you say, "He took half of all my stuff and I have to pay him alimony!?!?!?!"
I knew you could.
LMAO!! California.
---Well they are doing it the right way.---
What do you mean? The people voted overwhelmingly against gay marriage a few years back in a referendum. The legislature is spitting in their eye!
Not just a big laugh over this, think what the Mexicans are going to do to these guys when they take over the place.
It failed once and passed by one vote this time.
He should've announced that he'd veto it the first time it was brought up, especially if the voters rejected it in a statewide referendum.
America is not a democracy, 80%-90% opposed interracial marriage 45 years ago, and 35% still do, it was decided by the legislatures (coincidently this is something the opposition was complaining about, then when it happens it has to be done by the people, not everything deserves to be an initiative.
This is a state issue, if the voters of california disagree, the democrats will have to answer to them, and will be run out of office.
Who is "they" and what are they doing the right way?
---America is not a democracy, 80%-90% opposed interracial marriage 45 years ago---
We didn't have a referendum on it back then. This wasn't some poll. The people voted in an legitimate election!
"Well they are doing it the right way."
Good point. I can't for the life of me figure out why this is such a pressing issue. I mean really, are gays that powerful in California? Anyway, I guess those voting for this bill feel they're doing the right thing regardless of the political peril. There's a phrase for that but it escapes me... oh ya, I got it I think... is it... personal courage?
Ditto calcowgirl's question.....
waiting....

The California legislature? Too funny!
There sure are a lot of pro-gay marriage newbies on this site lately.
I hope the everybody is paying attention to this. THERE ARE YOUR DEMOCRATS! Vote for one of them; vote for them all!
