I'd still like to know what the normal weekly death toll number is for the area. I'd say the murder rate went up this week what with all the crackheads and crimminals running amuck.
The total death toll will be many times that of 9/11, probably 20,000 or more. This catastrophe covers 92,000 square miles (roughly the size of Great Britain). It is massive and devastating.
Sounds like this is the official "WORST DISASTER IN THE HISTORY OF THE USA". Bush needs to come down hard on those that dropped the ball.

I'm not sure I understand your comment. Do you want some kind of constitutional amendment that gives the president the power to "come down hard" on local officials? Do you really want the federal government to have that kind of power? I don't.
I don't think anyone has even the beginning of enough facts to make an informed estimate. My best guess is still less than 1,000 in MS and AL and less than 2,000 in LA.
I'm not saying we should start a pool however - that, would be ridiculous.

I hope you're right, but I'm afraid that the numbers will be considerably higher.
My wife works part-time for an answering company. One of their clients is a funeral home up here in Upstate New York. The home has a couple of its employees down in Biloxi serving as volunteers.
One of the employees called in from Biloxi - via the answering service - to let their employer know of their status. My wife transcribed the call as is her job. Anyways, the employee said, and I quote as best I can, "...we're processing 300+ bodies per day here in Biloxi alone."
As the Homeland Security director said on Sunday, we need to prepare ourselves for the numbers that will soon be tallied.

So, for the most part, the blood is on the sleeves of those who chose not to evacuate, who themselves perished.
Please don't flame... I know that some people were not able to evacuate for one reason or another... not of their own chosing. I greave for all of the deaths.
Sure we do. 100,000 people stayed in New Orleans and 17,000 were rescued.
A first responder in Mississippi said he saw over 1,000 bodies in the water the first night he got there.
There are towns with populations of 10,000 and more in Mississippi that are 100% wiped out.
The Federal Demort team in Mississippi has been told to expect 40,000 bodies which is most likely high but probably not by more than 50%.
All the pre bodycount speculations are just that, speculation and are not worth much except to guage how horrible certain officials think it is.
