A Gathering Storm for the Media

RALEIGH — There is a fetid stink in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and it’s not coming just from the fouled waters flooding New Orleans. It also wafts from the putrid reporting of the disaster by the mainstream media.

From the moment Katrina made landfall the media focused on anything that could redound to the detriment of President Bush or inflame race and class tensions. Reporters and commentators ignored the dismal performance of New Orleans’ Democratic mayor and Louisiana’s Democratic governor, blaming every problem that arose on the Bush administration.

Racial demagogues accused Bush and his administration of reacting slowly because most of the victims were black. Environmental activists said Bush’s refusal to sign the Kyoto Treaty caused Katrina’s severity. Democratic operatives said the administration’s decision to cut funding for a long-term study of flood control caused the levees to breach.

All of this is stuff and nonsense. The tragedy is that the media know it too, but they still printed it.

The media know that the first response to natural disasters is always from the local and state governments. They’ve covered enough hurricanes to understand that. They know, or should know, that the response from the federal government, especially the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is always in the second phase of recovery, not the first. They know, or should know, that a state’s National Guard is commanded by the governor, not the president. They know, or should know, that active-duty U.S. military personnel cannot act as law enforcement. But none of this was reported.

As for a president’s role, it has traditionally been in declaring disaster areas so that the victims can get grants and low-interest loans to rebuild, and ordering FEMA into the area. His role also traditionally includes a visit to the stricken area. That’s pretty much it, unless you’re George W. Bush; then that’s not enough. Not reported was that it was Bush himself who, before the storm hit, pleaded with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco to order a mandatory evacuation.

The misreporting of the tragedy, and the false impression it has left with some, is even being used now for other political advantage. On Sunday, NBC’s Matt Lauer interviewed “Meet the Press” anchor Tim Russert about Bush’s Supreme Court appointments. Russert said “there was a perception created of incompetence, some even said callousness and he needs to replace it with compassion” by appointing a moderate, a liberal or even a minority to the high court.

At least Russert was correct on one point. There was a “perception created.” The incessant drone of the media story line that Bush was to blame is what created that impression, and one that is entirely false. As with the run-up to the military operation in Afghanistan and Iraq, the media display a convenient amnesia about what they wrote in the past.

The story line today is that things were self-evidently so catastrophic as Katrina made landfall that everyone knew that drastic measures were called for. But was that the case? Here’s what The News & Observer of Raleigh’s public editor, Ted Vaden, wrote on Sunday:

“The N&O, like many other papers, was slow to wake up to the dimensions of the crisis but gradually ramped up the coverage in terms of space and reporters committed to the story,” he wrote. “The media were fooled the first day of the hurricane, when Katrina didn’t make a direct hit on New Orleans as expected. ‘I think that everybody got a head fake from this thing,’ said Dan Barkin, deputy managing editor. ‘I think we were kind of lulled.’”

Vaden pointed out that “the follow-up coverage on Wednesday likewise was restrained.” This candid assessment pretty much reflects the way most of the media covered the storm at the beginning. It was only after the incompetence of the mayor of New Orleans and the state’s governor in not forcing a pre-storm evacuation that the extent of the human tragedy unfolded. But instead of reporting this truth, it became a Bush bash fest.

And it continues. An Associated Press report from this morning was headlined: “Bush finally spending time on hurricane relief.” Finally. That’s the template word now. I saw that one coming Friday afternoon when I heard it used at least 10 times on National Public Radio to describe Bush’s actions regarding the hurricane.

Polls show that, unlike the media, the public does not blame Bush for the hurricane, the rioting, the looting, the stranded pets, the drowning deaths or the levee breaks. That means that the public doesn’t believe what the media are reporting. That’s the real gathering storm.

"Gathering Storm" is right. I had emails today from people from all over and they are irate over the Bush bashing.

Everything that happens now seems to divide us more and more and next week starts the confirmation for Chief Justice.

What is frightening are the Republicans who are starting to 'jump ship'!!

I don't believe the Pubs are jumping ship.

Roberts will get confirmed.
Lots and lots of things are coming out on Louisiana's governor and mayor to vindicate FEMA. Naturally, we must have a long drawn out investigation with 8X10 glossy photos with circles and arrows to air all of America's dirty laundry. In the end, after all the bashing, and after Mary Landreau gets to punch Bush out...everyone will live happily ever after. Disgusting!

I don't mean they are jumping ship on the confirmation. I have seen some on TV asking why the Administration was so slow in responding to N.O.

They must not spend time reading news articles and putting facts together like we do on the forum!

A simple time line of events, supported by federal law, will prove that the federal government is standing on Terra firma. On the flip side, the louisiana governor and mayor are in a mixing bowl, with a bad recipe.

Thanks for the ping.

The sophistic propaganda of the elite media is being recognized for what it is. They can no longer lie to all the people all the time and get away with it. Remaking the same B movie with bad actors is growing more than tiresome. The gathering storm is going to rip them and the hypocrites they cheerlead a new one.

I find it more than ironic that my local station carries CNN Radio Propaganda at the top and bottom of the hour during conservative talk radio shows like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

And this has been true since the 2000 election.

The leftists in the media are more interested in rebuilding the Democrat Party than they are in rebuilding NOLA and they will stoop to anything to gain political advantage. It beginning to sound like a game of limbo, "How low can you go?"

i didn't want to use the term corruption. But, Louisiana doesn't pass the smell test!!!

I've just been informed that California has been hit with about 150 mini earthquakes up and down the state.

The America hating "Mainstream Media" and their minders are once again proving the combat effectiveness of their ceaseless efforts to divide and defeat this country.

They have been, and continue to be, a more serious and FAR MORE effective threat to this country than Korea, Iran, China, Osama Bin Laden and his buddies, or anyone else.

They are worse than terrorists, worse than enemy combatants, and worse than the loony left.

Our lieing, traitorous, seditious, racist "Mainstream Media" know exactly what they are doing, aiding and abetting anything and everything anti American.

Until someone offers me a Cable or Sat-TV subscription that guarantees me absolutely *NO* ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC or even FOX channels, my cable STAYS canceled. (TV free for a couple years now.)

Try it, after a few months you too will be able to wonder how you were ever able to waste so much of your life watching their bile. Once the mind numbing fog clears from your brain, and you do get occasionally exposed, you'll start to notice things about what passes for TV that you never even considered before.

You'll also get your news faster and with less spin from the net, particularly here at Free Republic.

I switched to DVDs. I remember spending a weekend watching the entire first season of "24". I'd never even seen a single episode on TV. Such things are a treat without commercials and without waiting for the next episode.

Oh, and I just love it when I get those calls to accept free subscriptions to the San Jose Mercury News and the San Francisco Chronicle. I politely inform them that I just cannot bring myself to allow my doorstep to be darkened by their leftist hate speech. Some innocent child might get their hands on it, and become contaminated.

Louisiana Officials in Flood-Money Scam

Nine months before the Hurricane Katrina disaster, three Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness officials were indicted for obstructing an audit into flood prevention expenditures.

In a November 2004 press release, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Louisiana announced:

"A federal grand jury has returned two separate indictments charging three members of the State Military Department with offenses related to the obstruction of an audit of the use of federal funds for flood mitigation activities throughout Louisiana.

"The two emergency management officials were senior employees of the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Both were charged with conspiracy to obstruct a federal audit."

Gov. Kathleen Blanco told Louisiana's News-Star at the time that she was disturbed by the indictments. She said the National Guard is cooperating with the investigation "as I expect them to do."

Reports of rampant corruption among Louisiana's state and local agencies have been cited in recent days to explain why officials were so ill-prepared to deal with the Katrina disaster.

The media bears some responsibility for the chaos in New Orleans. Monday morning they were all over the place hailing that New Orleans had dodged the bullet. Katrina was passed and all was well. They sure weren't encouraging people to leave because the levee might break. They were, by their reporting, encouraging people to stay.

Absolutely right. They seem to get more shrill and rabid everyday. Soon they will, if they haven't already, go that one bridge too far and fall into the abyss if ridiculousness.

Your limbo analogy is perfect.
