Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show "Gilligan's Island," made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70.

Denver, who underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year, died at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina, according to agent Mike Eisenstadt. Denver's death was first reported by "Entertainment Tonight."

That was the script of every episode they ever made.

And that was when they were making 36 or 39 epi's/season.

Give me both, or give me Mrs. Howell.

Gilligan was before my time. Way before.

Then you need to know that the Maynard G. Krebs character is from the 1959 sitcom "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis"

The characters of Scooby Doo were a direct rip off the that show, with "Shaggy" being taken from Bob Denver's character, Maynard.

The Flintstones was also stolen from a sitcom of that era called "The Honeymooners".

I'm not sure where they stole the Jetsons from.

Sid and Marty Krofft were on some seriously strong acid in the 70's.

I always wondered about "Lidsville"...

RIP, Gilligan.

I loved the show. As corny as it was, it had a certain sophistication, as far as the characterizations.

Among my favorite episodes:

Gilligan's hair turns grey (then he goes bald).

Gilligan gets bitten by a vampire bat & believes he has turned into a vampire. (Great topical humor -- satire on BATMAN.)

Gilligan the secret agent (satire on GET SMART).

Mrs. Howell dreams she is Cinderella.

Not exactly. They did a show called "Rescue From Gilligans Island" in the late 70's where everyone was picked up and taken off the island. The show chronicled the difficulty they had reintegrating into society, and at the end a plot by a Soviet agent landed them back on the island again.

A couple of years later a second TV movie was made ("Gilligans Island Castaways" if I remember right) in which the people were finally rescued permanently. The Howells ended up buying the island and they all made a fortune after turning it into a resort.

The movies weren't very good, but they did wrap up the storyline. The actual final episode of the series wasn't a finale at all, and was written to be just another random episode. The movies were only made to bring some "closure" to the storyline.

A few years back, the company I work with had an off-site employee function which was to include a '3hour' boat tour of Wilmington, NC.

The die was cast, my friend at work and I decided then to stage a Gilligan fest, unbeknownst to fellow workers.

He's Gilligan, I'm done up as the Skipper, we had our little sign. (BTW, he actually got the shirt directly from Denver in West Virginia, it appears that Bob had a bit of the entrepreneurial spirit)

We got a big laugh from the co-workers, ceo, etc.

Thanks for all the laughs little buddy!!!

If you play the guitar music to Stairway to Heaven, but sing the lyrics to Gilligan's Island, it works perfectly. I stole the idea from a group called "Little Roger and the Goosebumps" who first performed "Stairway to Gilligan's Island" many years ago.

It always drove me crazy that they could build all this wierd stuff but could never patch up that little hole in the boat.

Which reignites the perennial debate.....Ginger or Marianne?

If he was a liberal, both.

At the same time.
