Seized Knockoffs Given To Katrina Evacuees
The Associated Press ^ | September 5, 2005 | AP

WASHINGTON -- They escaped Hurricane Katrina with nothing more than the clothes on their back. And now, they'll be wearing clothing with labels like Tommy Hilfiger and Yves St. Laurent.

They might not even mind that the labels are phony.

Hurricane survivors in the Houston Astrodome will be able to choose from counterfeit and abandoned clothing, as well as toys, dog food, and sheets and blankets.

They're among the items seized by federal customs officials. And now, they're being pulled from the warehouses and made available to hurricane survivors.

The agency has about a million items in storage. Customs officials are going through the inventory to see what might be useful to hurricane survivors.

If its just sitting a warehouse doing nothing, might as well put the goods to good use.

If the clothes shrink after washing, is it Bush's fault?

Have you seen the price of Eukanuba? Take some Gravy Train, stick it in an old Eukanuba bag... make a fortune.

Great idea! I saw a Freeper the other day complaining about folks carrying "Vuitton bags" at the shelters.

These things are not now and never have been Vuitton. These bags, watches, etc. are sold by Senegalese counterfeiters from blankets on the sidewalks of New York and just about any other major US and European city. Good to see them being put to a positive use!

Yeah, I hadn't thought of that.

Expect the "real" manufacturers to gripe loudly...

I guess the things that were supposed to have been destroyed, will be destroyed anyway... Give them away.

But, this was an illegal act. Those items are no different than counterfeit money, to the patent/copyright owner... That is why they were seized.

I guess its no different than a cop running 80 in the 65 zone. He has the "right" to do anything he pleases. Who's gonna stop him?

The Salvation Army needs more of our help, on a different thought! they are spending all the money directly on the victims...

(But we have to first blame Bush for the fact that not everyone can afford the genuine article...)

Yes, as per DNC talking points, you are correct.

Just wait.

I'll bet the manufacturers of the "real" goods are preparing to sue.

"Expect the "real" manufacturers to gripe loudly."

If it makes them so upset, then maybe they could go ahead and provide some of the real stuff.

Considering that Tommy Hilfiger said that blacks and Asians look bad in his clothes, I think this may bring some controversy. My cousin's nephew's godson's former roomate told me they saw Tommy say this on Oprah.

So tear out the freakin' labels before you distribute the clothes. I have a feeling the designers wouldn't dare open their mouths for fear of being seen as racist. Did I just say that? I sure did!!!

Filing suit in Harris County Texas at this time would not be in their interests. Trust me on this.

Somehow, I don't think they'd file in Harris County... I'm thinking more like Boston or SanFagisco.
