Buffeted by criticism over the federal response to Hurricane Katrina, President Bush said Tuesday he will oversee an investigation into what went wrong and why _ in part to be sure the country could withstand more storms or attack.
Bush also announced he is sending Vice President Dick Cheney to the Gulf Coast region on Thursday to help determine whether the government is doing all that it can.
"Bureaucracy is not going to stand in the way of getting the job done for the people," the president said after a meeting at the White House with his Cabinet on storm recovery efforts.
City to Offer Free Trips to Las Vegas for Officers
NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 4 - A day after two police suicides and the abrupt resignations or desertions of up to 200 police officers, defiant city officials on Sunday began offering five-day vacations - and even trips to Las Vegas - to the police, firefighters and city emergency workers and their families.
The idea of paid vacations was raised by both Mayor C. Ray Nagin and senior police officials who said that their forces were exhausted and traumatized and that the arrival of the National Guard had made way for the officers to be relieved.
"I'm very concerned about individuals who have been here, particularly since the first few days, and have been through a lot of hardship," Mr. Nagin said in an interview.
He said most of the police officers, firefighters and emergency medical workers "are starting to show signs of very, very serious stress, and this is a way to give them time to reunite with their families."
Mr. Nagin, who has been demanding more federal assistance for days as his city struggled with despair, death and flooding, said he had asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency to pay for the trips but the agency said it could not. He said the city, therefore, would pay the costs.
He said he believed there were now enough National Guard members in the city to allow the police to take a break and still keep the city secure, and he brushed off questions about whether such a trip might look like a dereliction of duty.

Who can just SIT in that yuck like that???
You mean Jack Quinn?
Cheney will not take any guff.
I'm not is his shoes, (thank goodness) and perhaps he is afraid of looters, but that poor dude, if he has not had his shots or medicine for overseas travel to third world countries (HepA, HepB, Cholera, Tetanus, Malaria, Dysentery), he is going to be one sick puppy with all that filthy water in his living room, in about five more days (unless his food runs out and he grows weak and delirious from that).
"cat-5-proof dikes"
Janet Reno?
That is why Nixon bombed the dykes.
A nasty a** person. Ewwwww!
"Buffeted by criticism over the federal response to Hurricane Katrina...
I gather the TV isn't working so he should get off his ass and do something!!! ANYTHING!!
And this, my dear Freepers, is the absolute bottom line.
Bush needs to turn to the people of Walmart (who got truck loads of supplies into NO) and ask them how a supply chain should be set up. And while he's at it, maybe he can ask them where people can go when they evacuate and all the hotels are filled... If you're going to ride out the storm in your car (church doors are closed for evacuators) maybe a Walmart parking lot would be safer. Please, President Bush, turn this over to the experts - the experts who care.
The main thing that went "wrong" was the a**holes in the media trying to make Bush look like Mr. Magoo. When the exact opposite is the truth.
Um, did he actually say he was *abdicating*?
ab-di-cate (ab'di kayt ) v. <-cat-ed, -cat-ing>He probably meant "advocating", but man, what a Freudian slip...v.t. 1. to give up or renounce (authority, duties, a high office, etc.), esp. in a voluntary, public, or formal manner.
"I am so weary of the blame-mongers."
What about the Red Cross being denied access while Travolta and Oprah get their photo ops? So much for the long fight to put Hollywood and the MSM in its place.
What about Homeland saying it didn't know there was a problem until Thurs?
Do you think they'll get 4 days warning from Osama?
There must be alot of people here that don't care about the Repubs running in 2008.
Nasty? He is going to have 57 varieties of fungus on his, er, crotch.
If you're forced to ride out the storm in your car (church doors are closed for evacuators) maybe a Walmart parking lot would be safer.
Please, President Bush, turn this over to the experts - the experts who care -- the people of Walmart.
Are you trying to say that Bush doesn't care? And that the National Guard doesn't know how to set up a supply line?
It has something to do with a sign that sat on Harry Truman's desk.
