Bush Says He'll Find Out What Went Wrong
Associated Press ^ | Sep 06 11:32 AM US/Eastern | WILL LESTER

Buffeted by criticism over the federal response to Hurricane Katrina, President Bush said Tuesday he will oversee an investigation into what went wrong and why _ in part to be sure the country could withstand more storms or attack.

Bush also announced he is sending Vice President Dick Cheney to the Gulf Coast region on Thursday to help determine whether the government is doing all that it can.

"Bureaucracy is not going to stand in the way of getting the job done for the people," the president said after a meeting at the White House with his Cabinet on storm recovery efforts.

Can you elaborate on what you think will be good here? Just curious for another perspective.

Fox just had a former Clinton butt boy on; he (of course) critizied the decision.

As bad as the mayor was down there, the governor was the biggest eff up down there.

I'm afraid the truth will be politically unpalatable, and will be suppressed. The truth is, most of the people still in New Orleans after the hurricane are clueless, and a lot of the ones who got out are too. Clueless people vote clueless leaders into office.

Save the money on what went wrong.

We can tell what went wrong. A mayor who didn't use resources at his disposal to remove people from harm's way.

A Governor who needed 24 hours to make a decision, cries every five seconds, and doesn't want to cede any control to the feds, all while not taking control of the situation herself.
NAGIN: The president looked at me. I think he was a little surprised. He said, "No, you guys stay here. We're going to another section of the plane, and we're going to make a decision."

He called me in that office after that. And he said, "Mr. Mayor, I offered two options to the governor." I said -- and I don't remember exactly what. There were two options. I was ready to move today. The governor said she needed 24 hours to make a decision.

S. O'BRIEN: You're telling me the president told you the governor said she needed 24 hours to make a decision?

NAGIN: Yes.

S. O'BRIEN: Regarding what? Bringing troops in?

NAGIN: Whatever they had discussed. As far as what the -- I was abdicating a clear chain of command, so that we could get resources flowing in the right places.

S. O'BRIEN: And the governor said no.

NAGIN: She said that she needed 24 hours to make a decision. It would have been great if we could of left Air Force One, walked outside, and told the world that we had this all worked out. It didn't happen, and more people died.

Personally, I would say that what went wrong is a Category 5 hurricane.

It would be fiscally impossible/irresponsible to build cat-5-proof dikes around all coastal cities.

I am so weary of the blame-mongers.

The infamous John Kelly( who represented Bill Clinton) fmr White House counsel said that the majority of people would not have much faith in an investigation conducted by the Federal Government. It would prefer something along the lines of the 9/11 commission( pass the blame to the feds it seems like the only acceptable result the democrats would approve).

Well if I were Nagin I would be more than a bit irked at Blanco at that juncture, for not hopping in and saving my bacon.

Here's the truth:

1.) Mother Nature knows how to kick butt...and there's little you can do except get out of the way (i.e. leave town!!!).

2.) Help is always slow. There are no magic buttons. Help takes time and will never, NEVER, be "good enough."

No matter what decisions the President makes in regards to the Katrina aftermath, the liberal establishment will find some fault. Liberal Democrats and their propagandist cohorts in the MSM aren't interested in problem solving. They're interested in pointing fingers at the President and his adminsitration. Sending VP Cheney down to the gulf coast will be fun to watch. Maybe a few fistfights will break out.

But what if the solution involved more than just bigger levees. What if it involved things like artificial barrier reefs (the Dutch do this) that absorb and diffuse the power of wind driven water surges.
