NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 4 - A day after two police suicides and the abrupt resignations or desertions of up to 200 police officers, defiant city officials on Sunday began offering five-day vacations - and even trips to Las Vegas - to the police, firefighters and city emergency workers and their families.
The idea of paid vacations was raised by both Mayor C. Ray Nagin and senior police officials who said that their forces were exhausted and traumatized and that the arrival of the National Guard had made way for the officers to be relieved.
"I'm very concerned about individuals who have been here, particularly since the first few days, and have been through a lot of hardship," Mr. Nagin said in an interview.

They'll probably use the Homeland Defense funds allocated since it sure as hell doesn't appear those funds were used for preparedness!
And what's with the NOPD only having 3 rescue boats, two of which weren't working?! The city sits in a bowl, surrounded by water, and the NOPD has ONE functioning rescue boat?!
I suppose the Feds are to blame for that too, Mayor Nagin?

I don't believe in the cannabalism rumour. It was first put forward by some lefty moonbat, and I don't think there's been any confirmation.
The trips to Las Vegas will not cost New Orleans anything. They are just going to visit with the people who actually run the state right now.

In his interview on CNN, Nagin was wondering if FEMA would finance these trips to Las Vegas. I suppose that's where most of the preparedness money from FEMA wound up before Katrina.

I guess this a--hole mayor will be sending some of the cops who were looting on a paid vacation to Las Vegas, along with several other officers who deserted. This mayor is an incompetent moron. The next move, he'll probably recruit the police chief of Aruba to be his next chief.
The vacation will end with a Kanye West/Celine Dion concert.
If I walked off my job I'd get a vacation too.

One suicide was because the policeman's wife had died in the flood...does not seem to be driectly related to the fact that he was a policeman. Don't know about the second one.

I'm not sure that is the case. I betcha that the police and fire unions and city employee union were his biggest supporters and helped get him elected. He's just taking care of his base.
I wonder if the free Vegas trips are only for the 500 police who stayed, or are they also for the 1,000 or so who scurried outa town before Katrina and when the thugs started shooting at people?
