New Orleans PD shot contractors - not thugs - on bridge
Mod point of clarification: The first 100 or so replies below were posted in reaction to reports that the contractors had been fatally shot.
Mod Update
The Associated Press
Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on a group of contractors traveling across a bridge on their way to make repairs, authorities said.
Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people carrying guns, killing five or six.
Fourteen contractors were traveling across the Danziger Bridge under police escort when they came under fire, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers.
They were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help plug the breech in the 17th Street Canal, Hall said.
None of the contractors was killed, Hall said.
The bridge spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.
No other details were immediately available.

I haven't seen this much wild speculation and confusion on FR since the ATF shot up that guys house and burned it to the ground back in 2001.

No doubt. When the AP can get way with partisan lying, many times it does.

Pre-Internet/cell phones/pdas, etc, only the journos involved would even know about it. Today, it's round the world in 80 seconds for every version filed, every 3 minutes.
I saw the chyron on FNC (I had the sound down). Turned up the sound and went to FR to see what was being said.
By post 100, which took just a minute or two, the correction was on FNC.
I have stopped watching the wires. Sometimes first is so wrong, it isn't worth it. Or I am just getting too old for the adrenaline. LOL1

Just proves they lie about the confirmations or their stories.Just proves for the 10,000th time .... 100,000th time ... that unnamed sources are insidious and not believeable.
Put a name on that anonymous Army Corps "source" and this story would neve have happened.

I did trust the NOPD to get it right. Springheeljack was raising another idea. But he and I both agreed -- that it was important to WAIT FOR THE DETAILS TO COME OUT.

Won't go into details, but my family experienced first hand a few years ago just how willing they are to LIE to make a story more exciting. I can only imagine. But I don't doubt it, one bit.

WWL says they have 3 different versions of the story from the AP... so they're only gonna read the one about killing contraactors and say, "we'll just have to wait"
Why does the media (even local ones) feel the need to "create drama" They have the facts and whats being reported in their hands.... Why create drama thats not needed?

Police, shot and killed, five people, group of contractors
AP had a writing assignment or something given the words above and made a story out this.
They couldn't have waited a few minutes to get the full story?

You're absolutely right. MSM has become what it alleged the internet was.
I note with increasing frequency, that MSM quickly jumps to report the negative news (anti-American & anti-Bush) faster than ever before. "Unconfirmed reports" are really no reports at all. Like you said, they're rumor mongering, especially whenever it fits their political agenda.

Ya know, I DID think the mayor needed to try and calm down because he was breaking under the stress of the situation....now I think the guy was already nuts before Katrina hit his city along with others in other states.

The media have made a total hash of this.Nevermind that you sit there calling long time members of this forum "a-holes".

What a horrible case of mis-reporting. CNN is not having a good week The AP initially mis-reported the story as well.

Get firefox and set it to only load images from originating website. Yep, plus you can get the "block image" feature that lets you block images in the future you don't like. I use it all the time and it does the trick for me.
Firefox rules in some aspects.. Plus if you want you can get the "Open in IE option right click option" for those rare web sites that don't function well with Firefox. But FR and Firefox are a good combination for us dialup users.

WWLTV reported a few minutes ago that CONTRACTORS WERE SHOT by the NOPD...3rd change in story on the AP wire. Repeat - now reporting contracters were killed.
They will not report again till get some kind of real confirmation on who is dead and who is not, etc...

Get everybody out and blow the river levees. It's the only way to be sure.
Um. The water is presently at the same height on both sides of the levees. This would change nothing.

Now we know why the levees were never improved.
After all I've read and heard, I think it should stay that way. I understand all about the peoples homes, the history and the culture and I don't think it's insignificant but maybe they should just let the ocean take it back. I thought I read on an earlier thread that the Army Corps of Engineeers figured it would take up to 6 mos. to get all of the water out of the city. A lot will not be very salvagable after that amt. of time underwater. Perhaps if the political corruption is dispersed, it will be weakened.
Flame away. Asbestos suit engaged.
