Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005 12:47 p.m. EDT Gov. Kathleen Blanco: No State of Emergency
Though her state has been devastated by Hurricane Katrina and thousands are believed dead in New Orleans, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco has yet to declare a state of emergency and refuses to cede authority over rescue efforts to the federal government.
"Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans," the Washington Post reported in Sunday editions.

Gov. Blanco's office rejected the request, the paper said - concerned that such a move would be comparable to a federal declaration of martial law. The Louisiana Democrat has also failed to declare a state of emergency - in marked contrast to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, who both issued emergency declarations before Hurricane Katrina struck.
State and federal officials also told the Post that Gov. Blanco did not reach out to a multi-state mutual aid compact for assistance until Wednesday - more than 24 hours after breaches in New Orleans levee system had flooded the city and killed thousands.
This lady is nuts.
The other states affected by Katrina? Did they sign up? Anybody know for sure.
From whatever appears to be sticking out of his head, I'd say he was an AFTER victim of Katrina..
By Who???
If you listen to the MSM.........as most of the sheep do, Bush stayed on vaction and said Let them eat Cake.
It would be up to US to do it.
God Bless Bush.......
The real emergency is having Blanco as governor. She's been less than unhelpful; she's actually made the situation worse through her inaction.
See posts 25 and 48.
Incompetence at the top and the ____ rolls downhill.
ping...
The Federal Government should just go ahead and declare martial law.
This is an enormous scandal that needs to be exposed. While screaming for the feds to "do something" they deliberately impeded the feds. I can't see no reason for this except gutter politics that killed people.
President Bush, you take care of saving lives, we've got your back.
Je suis la Reine de la Louisiane.
Let's set this straight now that we've seen the Governor's State of Emergency Proclamation at http://gov.louisiana.gov/Press_Release_detail.asp?id=973 and discredited the article posted, but there's still so much more fun to find on the Office of the Governor's website and this thread should remain.
IE: The below Executive Order interesting too. "Now where did I put those busses? Better say something before those FReepers give some damn fool pictures to Drudge."
