Sen. Mary Landrieu threatened the president of the United States with physical violence on Sunday, saying that if he or any other government official criticizes New Orleans police for failing to keep civil order in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina - "I might likely have to punch him - literally."
"If one person criticizes [our sheriffs], or says one more thing, including the president of the United States, he will hear from me - one more word about it after this show airs and I - I might likely have to punch him - literally," Landrieu railed on "ABC's "This Week."
It is illegal to threaten the president with physical violence.
The Louisiana Democrat blasted Bush for neglecting the New Orleans levees, and demanded that he stop using the disaster for "photo-ops."
"The president came here yesterday for a photo-op," Landrieu charged, while surveying the disaster scene via helicopter with "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos in tow. "He got his photo-op but we are never going to get this fixed if he does not send us help now."
Landrieu also blamed Bush for cutting funding for levee improvement, before bursting into tears on camera.
In recent days, Louisiana officials have been criticized for bungling evacuation and rescue efforts. One of those officials, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu, is Sen. Landrieu's brother.

"I've not seen this stated anywhere. Is there a reference that documents this? I'll need this fact in my back pocket." I misspoke, it's the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans not the Orleans Levee Board. Now your back pocket is full.Drainage System Operations The city's unique distinction as the only major U.S. city below sea level requires an extensive drainage collection and pumping system. The drainage system can currently remove roughly one-inch of rainfall in the first hour, and an additional half-inch per hour after that. The network consists of approximately 90 miles of open canals and 90 miles of subsurface canals. Most rainwater is pumped into Lake Pontchartrain except for two Westbank pumping stations and two stations in Eastern New Orleans that pump rainwater into the Intercoastal Waterway and the Industrial Canal. Within New Orleans there are 22 Drainage Pumping Stations with station personnel on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are 13 underpass stations containing 2-3 pumps turned on by rising water. The pumps are checked everyday and monitored during rain events. Two underpass stations, (one on the Westbank and the other on the Eastbank), are not run by the S&WB but by the State Department of Transportation and Development. The S&WB operates its own power plant and underground electrical distribution system to provide electricity for many of the pumps. Revenue The drainage system is funded by a property tax (currently at 22.59 mills per year), as well as interest and other minor sources. Federal funding for drainage capacity improvements supplements local funds in the S&WB capital budget. |

All I know is that he was prior to this taking on the corruption in NO. He was a good Mayor.
I don't know why he didn't evac, perhaps the Gov prevented him, I don't know and it will take time to know.
His past gives him credit.

I should have said "I don't want a woman president" but in truth, if she is the Republican candidate, I'll support her.

"The only reason she was elected was that she bussed thousands of these thugs in the last hour and a half to barely win."
Someone's tag line in here says: (I'm paraphrasing)
Democrats can bus people to polls to vote, but won't bus them to safety in a hurricane.

Landreau's comment may not have been as off the wall as it seems. Look here--

This is a huge article about the now dead New Orleans boss, what really got my attention is the incident where he punches an FBI agent.
ML's comment is so far off the map of rational Senatorial comment, could she have been deliberately referencing this incident? I have seen only one reference on FR and no discussion of the effect of Katrina and the flood on the NO mafia.

I feel sad for some of these officers, as I am sure there were many who wanted to do their jobs but had absolutely no leadership, no communications, and in some cases no bullet proof vests. Not all cops are Texas Rangers and I even doubt that the "one riot one ranger" rule could have triumphed in NO during this time. God Bless those cops who tried.

"Landrieu also blamed Bush for cutting funding for levee improvement, before bursting into tears on camera."
If I understood the situation correctly, an evacuation order was given 2 days before the storm hit, the levee is a city levee and New Orleans has always had corrupt politicians within the city but it's Bush's fault? I also understand that the city levee's have been in need of repair for many years now and was funded before so, what happened to the money from previous funding?
