just let all know that we have opened a pet shelter at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, right next to the Cajundome. Evacuees may bring their pets their for housing. We have PLENTY of food, water, crates, cages, bedding and newspaper. BUT the owners are responsible for feeding, watering, walking and medicating their own pets.
Interested parties may call Lafayette Parish Animal Control at 337-291-5644 for more information.
Also many area vets are accepting animals right now, until they fill up. Get the Yellow Pages out!
Oh how I wish I could help! Did you see the story about the little boy whose dog Snowball was consfiscated from him when he was going to get on a bus? He cried until he vomited. This seems so cruel. Is there any way of knowing what happened to that dog? I hope he just wasn't turned loose. Since reading that story I've literally cried (so have others over this) had a nightmare, emailed anyone I could think of who could do something about this including a bunch of reporters, and donated to 3 different animal rescue organizations. Oh how I wish I could get that little boy his dog back.
Could you post an address so far-away FReepers can send donations?
btt
Please do.
BTTT.
Me too Aria.........I have been trying to find out what happened to that poor little boy's dog. I hope we find out.
friends if you will call the number, they will give you the address there and let you know about sending etc.....
yes I did see that story...reminds me of ME....poor little fellow and poor little dog... :(
I cant read anymore stories about animals...its upsets me soooooooooo much...how it couldnt break anyones heart is beyond me....
when my big ole cockatoo, or macaw says MAMA come here, they mean it....I am Mama to them....sorry if it ticks off others....I love them like a Mama....I have a grown son, who is an aeronautical engineer in the Research Triangle...I love him without end, as I do my "critters"..
One more desperate plea, if anyone is in this area:

I sent an email to staff at Noah's Wish...maybe they will know. There are so many awful stories but this story just hit me hard, made it so real for me. And I don't think it was necessary at all. I saw video this a.m. of the California National Guard (I think it was) loading people onto truck and many had dogs with them. I read that it is the Red Cross who wouldn't allow dogs. This seems so wrong!
I will rescue a Newfoundland dog, if one needs rescue. Have nice big fenced yard with swiming pool. Lot's of experience with Newfoundland dogs.

lost and found and needing help etc.....
I want Woodword and Bernstein (Washington Post) to find SNOWBALL and find the boy and join them! They can destroy a President, why not this?
Basenji Rescue & Transport, Inc. (a 501(c)(3) dog rescue charity) is collecting money to be used to rescue and rehome animals lost in the disaster. We are working with small shelters in the area that do not have credit card donation capability. In the past day, we have sent $4,500 to the Humane Society of Central Louisiana and $1,000 to the Humane Society of West Louisiana. To donate, just go to our website at:
http://www.basenjirescue.org/donate.htm
Look for the donate now button.

ps. If you hear of any basenjis that need help, please contact us. Thank you!
That is wonderful!!..... all little dogs will helped, no type specific.. and parrots, birds, whatever.. that is hungry and suffering......thru the Humane Society Im hoping.....
thank you for posting this, and I hope everyone that can, will donate ...
I am hoping all this rescue talk will spur 365 24/7 help for animals....Due to no gas, no money because of some small home repairs, an elderly parrot owner needs food for her birds....SHE loves them, and sometimes we all need a helping hand...things happen, doesnt mean we dont love our animals, because we run out of funds sometimes....My husband and I will be going down to the country and taking her what she needs, plus some extra....
there seems to always be a need, and there is nothing shameful in asking for help if you need it.... I belong to many local groups that keep in touch with folks that are older and need to be checked on now and then, and their animals maybe need a ride to the vet OR funds to take them to a Vet....we're not rich, but we always try to help...
I hope lots of folks will get involved locally in groups that do help year round.....
ok, thats my plea for today....
thanks for reading

My husband said that a shoot to kill order with regards to animals may begin soon. They believe it is the most humane way to handle the multitude of animals that are starving and ill, or injured. I cannot fathom this, and I can't bear to think that someone's family pet will end like this.
Hopefully one of those wonderful rescuers, who though so over-worked, saw what happened and took Snowball under their wings and hopefully will re-unite him with his owner.
That would be thoroughly disgusting and unnecessary. Noah's Wish and other organizations are there to rescue the animals!!!
