As the National Guard delivered food to the New Orleans convention center yesterday, American Red Cross officials said that federal emergency management authorities would not allow them to do the same.
Other relief agencies say the area is so damaged and dangerous that they doubted they could conduct mass feeding there now.
"The Homeland Security Department has requested and continues to request that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans," said Renita Hosler, spokeswoman for the Red Cross.
"Right now access is controlled by the National Guard and local authorities. We have been at the table every single day [asking for access]. We cannot get into New Orleans against their orders."

Though frustrated, Hosler understood the reasons. The goal is to move people out of an uninhabitable city, and relief operations might keep them there. Security is so bad that she fears feeding stations might get ransacked.

Blank the red cross can't even collect blood right.
Tell her to contact

Someone please give reason why they have kept out the ham radio people who have traditionally provided communication links when no one else could.
It sounds like deliberate something by the inept Homeland Security people.
Maybe not. If they bring the food in without getting the people out then many may just return to their neighborhoods to either try to pick up their lives if home is there or move into a shantee nearby with their loot. This would cause even more deaths due to the likelyhood of disease or the possibility of one of the anticipated near future storms hitting NO again resulting in drowning of anyone who stayed behind.
Everyone needs to get out first then we can all argue about the timetable for residential return and if they are ever allowed to stay to resettle.
That's whats being done, but the places with facilities to house the people are not just outside the city, but in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas ...
Aaron Bayles, a registered nurse who works at St. Luke's Hospital, brought his stethescope and blood pressure cuff to the Astrodome this morning after he heard there was a need for medical personnel, but officials there asked him to go to the convention center instead, where they said there was a need for registered nurses.

Homeland Security wants to keep out the ham radio operators, the Red Cross and who knows who else.
They want all the credit or the blame for themselves.
Right now it's weighted on the blame side.
If their safety and access was that big of concern how could all of these media trucks get in their day after day without a problem.
This is an excuse for no coordination not lack of want or heartless rescuers.
To accuse the media of being drama queens while people are starving and dehydrating around them is just amazing when your sitting in your comfy house with all the food and water you need.
It's not rocket science try bringing them water and food. The basics. Relieve the desperation.
I don't live in a soup bowl and really don't want to.
I did one day in fact drive a Chevy to a Levy...and even saw some "good 'ol boys"...however...they were drinking Budweiser.
People should be brought out of NOLA, not kept there. Water is the essential that must be brought to those still stranded, until they can be moved safely -- so many people don't understand that in an extreme emergency water is the essential (most people won't live more than 3 or so days without any), while food in such a situation is, yes, non-essential, more of a comfort than a necessity. Of course no one wants to be hungry, but people (unless they have certain medical conditions such as diabetes) can live for weeks on water or juice, etc. I'm not saying for a moment that everyone still in NOLA doesn't need ample food as soon as possible, just that Homeland Security is probably quite right in not wanting to set up a meals operation in NOLA that might well keep people there in such terrible conditions, when what's really needed is to bring them out.
Her fears are well founded.
When these thugs decide to evacuate on a bus so they can terrorize another city, they'll have to leave behind the TV sets they looted.
I think some of the journalists, like Shep Smith and Joraldo, were genuinely stressed out by the plight of the children and the elderly.

Given the level of criminal incompetence that has been displayed by the local & state governments in both New Orleans & Louisiana it was probably not the Feds that said no to the Ham radio & REACT folks but the locals who are to crooked to let outsiders get anywhere near their private fiefdom with commo gear that they don't control. Since these folks aren't of the PC class ie they are able to operate on their own & won't tell lies just to save some politicians sorry butt.
