Valenti and her husband, two of very few white people in the almost exclusively black refugee camp, said she and other whites were threatened with murder on Thursday.
"They hated us. Four young black men told us the buses were going to come last night and pick up the elderly so they were going to kill us," she said, sobbing. "They were plotting to murder us and then they sent the buses away because we would all be killed if the buses came -- that's what the people in charge told us this morning."
Other survivors recounted horrific cases of sexual assault and murder.
Sitting with her daughter and other relatives, Trolkyn Joseph, 37, said men had wandered the cavernous convention center in recent nights raping and murdering children.
She said she found a dead 14-year old girl at 5 a.m. on Friday morning, four hours after the young girl went missing from her parents inside the convention center.
"She was raped for four hours until she was dead," Joseph said through tears. "Another child, a seven-year old boy was found raped and murdered in the kitchen freezer last night."

Perhaps I have it wrong, my interpretation of marx, I would say that has come to be what people have extrapolated, if incorrectly. Still, Marxists find vilifying organzied religion effective, thus removing a vehicle which in times of turmoil can provide both spiritual and physical redress to difficult situations. Absent that, the oppressed must turn to the state. Those oppressed who are entire wards of the state dare not turn to local government, as the local government is just a few stops up the food chain from the wards themselves. V's wife.
During my visit I discussed these problems at length with Governor Riley of Alabama, Governor Barbour of Mississippi, Governor Blanco of Louisiana and Mayor Nagin of New Orleans. Each state will have its own set of challenges and issues to solve. Yet all of us agree that more can be done to improve our ability to restore order and deliver relief in a timely and effective manner. This morning I received a briefing on the latest developments on the ground. Right now there are more than 21,000 National Guard troops operating in Louisiana and Mississippi, and more are on the way. More than 13,000 of these troops are in Louisiana. The main priority is to restore and maintain law and order, and assist in recovery and evacuation efforts. In addition to these National Guard forces, the Department of Defense has deployed more than 4,000 active duty forces to assist in search and recovery, and provide logistical and medical support. Hour by hour, the situation on the ground is improving. Yet the enormity of the task requires more resources and more troops. Today I ordered the Department of Defense to deploy additional active duty forces to the region. Over the next 24 to 72 hours, more than 7,000 additional troops from the 82nd Airborne, from the 1st Cavalry, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, and the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force will arrive in the affected areas. These forces will be on the ground and operating under the direct command of General Russ Honore.
Thank you GOD for this man. Slapped sense into the Louisiana Democrats that they NEED US Combat troops there. Bet you anything the forces mentioned above do NOT end up anywhere in Alabama or Mississippi. What an amazing contrast to the 3 days of hysteria , posturing and finger pointing from the Dems leadership.
Yes I agree, but compare them to the ones that have stayed. There are some good men still there. What I don't understand is why they didn't deputize civilians. Give someone responsibility and a cause and they most often step up to the plate.
My husband and I were talking about Houston this morning. We are both optimists but he wishes they had not gone to to the Astrodome. We are right in the middle of the season and if Houston gets hit...
I can do both at the same time:')
I don't understand why they are sending so many able bodied men and women out of the state, when there is so much work to be done. Put those who can to work to start cleaning up the mess created, not only in the street but at the refuge centers that were so overburdened. If there is food and water available to nourish them, there is absolutely no reason for them to be lounging away in Houston or any other city, while they complain about the lack of aid they received.
There is absolutly no reason for any of them to be not working. If they can't be clearing debris, then they can be working to serve those that are..
Offering them work to come back a good idea but after 5 days even the most able probably exhausted. I see a lot of children, elderly and sick. It's too soon, I think for clean up to start. Knowing our government though, probably only unions will be hired:'(. I don't believe in recovery grants either. No or low interest loans yes. I noticed on several occasions when people interviewed they make a point of talking about where they worked. Sad.
Because those in a position of authority to do that ran with their tails between their legs or were rolled up in the fetal position unable to make any decisions.
Well thats a good question. There is a problem when more and more people vote without having enough knowlegde about what their choice will mean. When people cannot figure out the voting ballott like in Florida things get scary.
Must be a follower of Fat Al or Calyso Louie..
ABOUT 30% OF THE NEW ORLEANS POLICE FORCE DESERTED!
I saw a segment on CNN (of all places) where a reporter managed to get to a NOPD police station where several cops and their families were holed up. They were under attack whenever they tried to go out of the building. They spent nights on the roof trying to protect it from the criminals.
One woman cop there raged into the camera about the 30% or so of the cops who deserted. She held her badge and said they took an oath to protect the people, and said they don't deserve to wear that badge.
How much anyone here want to bet every cop who deserted will fired? Never happen.
Ever since the Rodne King incident and riot here in Los Angeles, I have struggled very, very hard to not hate them in return. After New Orleans, however, I just don't know if I have the strength of character to do it any more.
What we need here is more cake and fewer clowns.
Almost all packaged food floats; have you ever thawed chicken in the sink?
My take is that the guardsman was being sarcastic to the journalist because all they ever cover in Iraq are dead bodies--no positive news.
I believe we are running along the same line. Replace religion with the state to create a dependent society. Religion maintains the concept of individuality as one under God. Marxists, Socialists, Communists and Fascists require abdication of self to the state.
@#$%^&*!! How could a commotion like that be missed???
