President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

What happened to the reporter that was at the superdome the night of the hurricane? Did he REALLY freak out and need to be pulled?

" The situation is worsening every minute. It is a catastrophe beyond any we have seen as a nation on our soil."

One of the women in my office finally made contact today with her family in NO.
I trust her completely and she reports that her family stayed in their home and while they did not get much flood damage-they are afraid to leave their home and search for rescue.
Nightfall brings gangs of armed thugs who ransack every house. They are protecting their home with a shotgun and are terrified.
Her brother is a paranoid schizophrenic , living in a group home in NO.
The home released all the residents without their meds- they have no idea where the brother is and are very worried about how he will act without medication.

Earlier on the thread someone stated it was Usher. I was not watching the telethon. It has later been reported it was West.

Thanks for making the distinction, but just to note, only going by what the original poster reported until corrected.

Actually i bought it at first too. Til i went to the source doc and saw that there was absolutely no credible source for that info. They only said it came from a Civil rights leader or something like that. No names. I assume it JJ's people. Since this coincided with his involvement in this situation.

BTW, why is JJ going to N.O. with all his entourage? Why doesn't he volunteer his bodyguards to help keep order in the streets of N.O.?

How can Texas absorbed all of these people? This is going to be a long term problem.

Yes. The evacuation and relocation of a city of over a million, wehre a significant fraction is thugs, is a long-term problem.

Why are you celebrating buildings when thousands of people have died and others are still stranded? History is people, not buildings.

It is an emotional time, so I think I understand why you would post this to me. There is a time and a place to argue with you the meaning of history and what constitutes a historical record, but I won't argue that with you academically at this time.

This Square is one of the centers of identity of this City. It is an icon of the best of New Orleans in so many ways. The Square is patterned on the Place des Voges in Paris. It is a place where I have walked with my sister and father in the beautiful sunlight and sometimes got caught in the pouring rain. I have received the Holy Eucharist and worshipped the Real Presence of Christ in that Cathedral on that Square.

I have had luxurious days where my sister and brother-in-law watched our kids so my husband and I could go down there and have coffee and beignets and some of the sweetest time together. So in part my love of the Square is personal, so personal it hurts.

Beyond myself its continued existence tells me that some day others will be there again. It tells me the city will live. I celebrate this survival because it gives me a holy hope for the future.

Maybe that is the real Geraldo in freak out mode.

yes, i've watched Jerry for years---this is the real deal, i've never seen him lose it like this. I hope people are capturing this video for later.

Anything important happen the last 3 hours?

Just the media trying to act like it's the 60's again with the civil rights act

I really resent this

The rescuers down there aren't only helping white people .. they are helping ALL Americans

I didn't donate my money to help only the white people

I donated money to help ALL Americans

I simply don't think it is helpful to see Geraldo pick up a perfectly serene child and cause the baby to cry hysterically with his drama.

This isn't playing well in middle America.

I tend to disagree with that assessment. We'll see....

I thought they broke into the Convention Center to begin with? If so, I'd be surprised if someone was locked in, unless it was in a room or something.

no, to be fair, he did not say "locked inside" - he said that roadblocks prevent them from leaving the area via the roads.

According to FOX, they are locked in, the folks are going, walking, swimming, to where they were told to go.

And also, he said he just left NY yesterday.

Hell maybe he can't handle it. Maybe he just wasn't prepared. A LOT of the people that are getting evac'd are breaking down too. Shep is practically a refugee himself from how he is acting. Give them a bit of a break. They are THERE after all and people react differently to despair.

People love being cynical about this, but I won't. I can't imagine what those National Guard troops are going into. God grant them strength for the long haul.

Shep was on national television Monday at 6:00 a.m. talking about how New Orleans "dodged a bullet" WHEN THE EYE WAS STILL OUT IN THE GULF!
I'm sure he's wondering how many folks stuck around because of his non-scientific analysis.
These hotrod journos need to be held accountable for their free speech. Yelling "no hurricane" is akin to yelling "fire" in a theatre, IMHO.

I agree......they have both lost it. Has Shep ever done any actual reporting from the field before? He's much too emotional.
