President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Where is the 60 Minutes story about the Gov in denial on the 28th?

60 Minutes is dancing around the fact that local government had to be bypassed in order to achieve results.

60 Minutes is refusing to say how the LA authorities did not allow federal help!

At least five fatally shot by police on New Orleans bridge 9/4/2005, 5:54 p.m. CT The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on a group of contractors traveling across a bridge on their way to make repairs, authorities said.

Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people carrying guns, killing five or six.

Fourteen contractors were traveling across the Danziger Bridge under police escort when they came under fire, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers.

They were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help plug the breech in the 17th Street Canal, Hall said.

None of the contractors was killed, Hall said.

The bridge spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

No other details were immediately available

I guess not all of Maxine Water's constiuents made the bus to Alexandria!

National Hurricane Director had to call Nagin at home Saturday night to plead: "Get people out..."

"The criticisms of Nagin came from above as well. Numerous officials urged him to evacuate the city, but he worried about the legality of ordering people out when New Orleans has few safe hurricane shelters. Also, National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield in Miami called Nagin at home Saturday night and told him: "Get people out of New Orleans."

Nagin knows how to play for the cameras.

Nagin played his violin while New Orleans drowned.

The man looks clinically insane. The kind of crazy you avoid on the street.

I'm sorry, but I can't believe they are going to offer cruise ships for temporary housing, I mean, look what a mess the Superdome and the Convention center were left in, who's going to pay for the repairs on the cruise ships when they leave?

The National Guard is referring to certain flooded parts of N.O. as "Lake Nagin" over the radios...that is classic.

60 minutes saying Nagin ordered evac 2 days before hurricane! Wasnt it sunday..one day before?

I think there were two (maybe more) evacuation orders. The really urgent "mandatory" one was on Sunday. An earlier order was not mandatory, but urged preparation for an evacuation.
