President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.
The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.
The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.
Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WWL-TV New Orleans (via WFAA Dallas) - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity. Yahoo has also provided a relay.
WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.
WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.
WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.
WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.
WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).
United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

It is a barrier. We don't want armed thugs that slipped through the cracks in LA to get out into the wild in Texas to ravage our state. We don't need that, we don't want that, and it's not going to happen if we do what makes sense.
There have already been multiple arrests of wanted and escapees from NO in TX at the screening points. Check this and other threads for info as to other stuff.
We are *NOT* going to tolerate foolishness.
Once the refugees are cleared through the checkpoint, they are wrmly welcomed by cheerful sympathetic aid workers who say something like "Welcome to Texas! Sorry about that, but you understand that we have to take precautions after everything that's gone on. What do you need? How can we help?"
Well, there is gastritis, gastroenteritis and infectious gastroenteritis. The last form falls in the infectious disease category along with Hepatitis, Aids, TB, etc.

Ok, gonna go get some sleep.
Last update for the night. Lots of police patrolling in their cars tonight, shining those high intensity spotlights at anyone on the street. The only civilians out are the homeless, one of whom you've all seen on the cam day after day -- the guy who set up his little stolen clothes shop on the sidewalk under the Pan Am building. We've got four regulars out there now -- the guy I just mentioned, a drunk who carries a cane and beats on every object he passes, a woman who wears a leather skirt and thinks everyone is a cop and offers herself for arrest, and her man who basically yells at her all day. At least the police aren't bothering them. I hope they can get some professional help, but I'm sure that's unlikely.
Oh well, hopefully things will continue to improve. It would be nice to have some pleasant news to report.
We have to welcome them this way. We will not tolerate the violent horsesh*t the way that NO does. And these people have been in extremely unsanitary conditions, the hypo-allergenic gloves are blue. No symbolism in it. We are not so naive as to think that all of these folks evacuated from the church choir section. We will seperate the vicious ones from everyone else. It is the right thing to do. Anyone that has an issue with how we welcome these folks to Texas, is encouraged to pound sand.

Do you actually think there will BE any hearings? I doubt it...the Dems, although they are the MINORITY, hold too much sway. They have the MSM on their side 24/7.

It dose seem that there may have been an excess of bureaucracy; on the other hand, this is such a huge disaster than any reasonable system might have temporarily broken down. I believe there are valid reasons for putting FEMA under DHS, but, as you say, it is probably too early to make that judgment.
