President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Said he pleaded with her Tuesday to call for martial law when Barbour did--she did not. He does not know why.

Reports of New Orleans police suicides

I've been following the blog of a guy in a high-rise in downtown NO. His company provides ISP services of some sort and they've kept their networks up via generators.

He just reported that police have told him that two fellow officers have commited suicide.

"Geraldo said one person was shot in the head at the superdome. The guy was in the process of raping a 13 year old."

I hope he was kicked in the head too.

One woman who came out of the dome said the crowd beat to death someone who raped a little girl.

I read a lot of stuff about how society can break down as y2k approached. Its amazing how much of this proved true.

Neither of the two R Govs you mentioned would have been caught out like this.

In fact, it HAS happened to two R govs - Miss and Ala are both Republicans.

Oddly enough, the press isn't there because things are progressing smoothly... I wonder why that could be.... Oh, yeah - LEADERSHIP WITH A CLUE.

Thanks. The one with the cell phone charger would be nice, but is probably more expensive. Do you happen to know which model that would be?

You will see the TX Democrats trying to get the state redistricted yet again due to the influx of people.

"Actually that's a bad thing, now Texas is closer to being a blue state as a result."

Houston alone is a city of something like 4 to 5 million residents. 25,000 new voters, even if every single one pulls the D lever, is not a significant statistic here.

The wealthier ones--who own property and had jobs--are likely to return to N.O.

But looks like the poor, having nothing to go back to, are just as happy to be poor wherever they're sent:

I think you're right. The people with good jobs which have survived in NO, or who own property - they would be foolish to stay away too long. And BTW, I don't know where I saw it, but I recall reading something to the effect that African-American home ownership was relatively high in New Orleans.

"It isnt an air force base anymore...there are businesses there and a retirement center and a golf course....they made it sound like barracks are sitting there read to move in"

Sounds like a potential problem then if they arrive there with those buses uninvited.

Mr. Livingston made the points that the Governor of LA refused his pleas (and those of others, I am sure) to call for martial law on Monday like Gov. Barbour did in Miss. THAT is the reason for the delay and the FEDS who keep getting criticized need to make clear whose fault it was and then say - let's get on with the disaster relief.
