President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WWL NEWS

Updates as they come in on Katrina

03:08 PM CDT on Saturday, September 3, 2005

Tom Planchet

3:05 P.M. - BATON ROUGE: The former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency joined the Louisiana government Saturday to help direct the recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

James Lee Witt, who ran FEMA from 1993 to 2001, said he will stay as long as he as needed.

"He will sit at the table for me, and he will be my voice at the table," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said.

Louisiana officials are getting stretched too thin and need help, she said. "I like to hire the smartest people in the country," she added.

Witt has more than 25 years of disaster management experience. He was appointed to head FEMA in 1993, after President Clinton took office. FEMA had been strongly criticized in 1992 for its slow response to Hurricanes Andrew and Hugo; after Witt took over, it won praise for its vigorous reaction to Midwest floods and the 1994 Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles.

Blanco said that when she told Mike Brown, FEMA's current head, that she hoped to hire him, "he said, `That is absolutely the right thing to do. He will make a huge difference."'

At the National Hurricane Conference in March, Witt said putting FEMA under the Homeland Security Department hurt its ability to deal with natural disasters.

On Saturday, he said, "Now's not the time to point blame at anyone."

All just bet that JJ and Al brought lot's of relief supplies with them and will be leaving with many evacuees.

What? All they brought was two more mouths?

From the scanners, it sounds like Witt is getting lost in the shuffle.

Seems the adults are too busy to play.

These people could CARE LESS about that. All they are concerned about is thier voting base going away...

They would rather these people live in SQUALOR, than give up a Democrat seat...

PEOPLE! We are seeing the DNC reaction, playing the Race-card to the storm, and frankly, it's making my BLOOD BOIL!

I know. I'm reading and watching. The politics are the worst I've seen yet. Is the hildabeast pulling the strings on these puppets?

I think that just set a new world record, along with "world's longest uninterrupted convoy".

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Well yeah it will make a big difference since Blanco wasn't doing and seems not be held responsible for anything that has happened in the state she is suppose to be governing.

What brand is that and where can you get them besides Wal Mart or Fry's (maybe you can order online at Fry's). How much are they? They would make good gifts, too, if price is reasonable.

For a long time I had been considering the c crane one, but it was at least $100 or more.

Many will want a new start, this is the opportunity.

Some have already been quoted as such. Not hard to see why: many will eventually settle near friends or family somewhere, where they can get jobs in a place with a functioning infrastructure - something NO isn't going to be able to provide for months to come.

The sad-but-funny thing about this is the evacuation to TX and other states was never intended to be more than a stopgap (how long can you live in a stadium, no matter how well maintained?) with the people then being given the opportunity to go where they wanted to go.

Karl Rove will be blamed, if he hasn't been already, for transporting their voting base from LA to a solid red state, TX.

Whats going to happen when the buses get to this airforce base and it isnt ready?

Can it be made ready that quick?

Even if it can, will the ok be given?

I think it will, under the circumstances, if it is possible.

***Is the hildabeast pulling the strings on these puppets?***

I'm betting it's the CBC, with Dean's blessing...

These people SEE that this population may NEVER reurn to LA, and that the makeups of their Districts are changing FAST!

They are more worried about LOSING SEATS IN 2006, than with the welfare of the people they were elected to protect...

It's so damn sad, yet so damn typical...(And expected)
