President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WWL-TV New Orleans (via WFAA Dallas) - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity. Yahoo has also provided a relay.

WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

" The former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency "

Joe Albaugh, an *effective* former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has been in Baton Rouge since Tuesday morning, at least -- presumably working behind the scenes and without fanfare. (I've seen him on Fox a couple of times)

Actually that's a bad thing, now Texas is closer to being a blue state as a result.

New Orleans Blues 2005

When you need a plan to evacuate
Who ya gonna call? Mayor Nagin?
When you need a bus and it's getting late
Who ya gonna call? Mayor Nagin?
Lucky thing that I have a floating device
At the voting booth he's gonna pay the price
If it weren't for George Bush where would I be?
Thanks to the Coast Guard and the U.S. military!
And let's not forget the American volunteers
I will not forget and I thank you all in tears!

Cool picture, but notice the water is still flowing out of the city. Not a good time to plug it up.

The Army Corps of Engineers guy on WLL speculated that the waves were very strong against one wall of the canal, then bounced back across the canal where the breach was made and eroded the levee. (Does that make sense? My interpretation of what he said.)

Karl Rove will be blamed, if he hasn't been already, for transporting their voting base from LA to a solid red state, TX.

I'm sure the DUmp has already thought of this.

I agree, this race thing is sickening. The gov. is as always overwhelmed. But, because this time it's predominately black faces, opportunist have shifted the dialog.
The FEMA people were caught flat footed but that is the nature of gov. Thinking out of the box is not how they operate. To gov. officials; adapt, and improvise is Greek.
Had this been white people the same machine would have moved just as slowly. I lived through it during Hugo. The water separated us on the barrier islands from prompt assistance. By the time they got there, we didn't need them.

Apparently, the response went something like "OK, we'll get up there as soon as we get free" and I haven't heard anything since - they usually alert over the radio on approach, etc.

"I saw that, a Clinton guy, so is he going to overstep Michael Brown?"

I think the Klintoons' plan is that he does, but as I understand it from the Sect'y of HS's briefing this a.m., the Feds (adults) are now in control. I don't think there is much he has control over, though he can certainly try to undermind what the Fed do (or b*tch about it). I think it's more that her highness the Gov has been 'persuaded' to step out of the way and his charge is to communicate w FEMA (I suspect he'll give all sorts of pressers about how bad they're doing, how they're doing things wrong, when he was FEMA director he did it this way, yada, yada, yada).

The canal acted as a waveguide, which reflected and amplified the wave action.

You can hear the audio analog if you set up a sound source, stick a cardboard tube to your ear and point it at the sound source. The sound sounds much louder through the tube because the reflections "amplify" the noise.

The politics are the worst I've seen yet. Is the hildabeast pulling the strings on these puppets?

I'm generally not as rabid an anti-Hillary type as many here - I think the danger she poses is somewhat overblown - but the Witt appointment is a giant red flag. There is no more loyal Clinton apparatchik than Jamie Lee.

I agree with No Blue States that the survivors probably would prefer to stay as near their former homes as they can.

The wealthier ones--who own property and had jobs--are likely to return to N.O.

But looks like the poor, having nothing to go back to, are just as happy to be poor wherever they're sent:

"Many who fled flooded New Orleans for shelter in Houston's Astrodome are already eyeing potential jobs and considering making Houston their new home. Will evacuation turn to immigration?"
