President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

The former was a guy who was attacking someone else with scissors.

Nothing wrong with either shoot, IMHO.

:::Gave the whole impression of herself as too nice to point at Bush and fema, but left the thought there that she had been about to do that. I think she is evil.:::

After the crisis passes, I pray that she gets tried for murder. Her actions or lack of actions has caused undo numbers to die.

Witt was FEMA director under former President Clinton, serving in that position from 1993-2001

Following is a link, from blogger GEA3, that will give you an idea how much the Clinton folks like Witt did for flood control in Louisiana. Here is a taste of what the Clinton administration did in 1995 thru 2000: US Left: All Straws Clutched, Every Barrel Scraped A sample from 1995: Clinton administration officials argue that the flood-control efforts are local projects, not national, and should be paid for by local taxes. I would argue that every project proposed over the last 100 years to protect New Orleans from a category 5 hurricane would fail to prevent a catastrophic destruction of that city. If anyone can provide a counter argument to that statement, other than relocating the entire city, I would like to hear it.

Most of them are probably going to change their party affiliation once they get here and see how we do it here.

"Well yeah it will make a big difference since Blanco wasn't doing and seems not be held responsible for anything that has happened in the state she is suppose to be governing."

Isn't that the truth! Can you imagine if this had been a Pubbie Gov???? What if this had been Perry in TX or G*d forbid Bush in FL???

It's easy for him to sound tough now considering the Feds bailed his sorry butt out of the fire

I know a local soldier who is with the 256th ECB in Iraq. Most of them are from LA, and this soldier says some of these guys had homes that were flooded by the levee break. He says it's hitting a lot of them hard.

The kicker is that they have been "on their way home" for a couple of weeks now as their tour has ended. And some of these soldiers now have no home to come home to.

Prayers, please!

the media will be throwing all the credit for the FEMA effort, to Witt now.

Is he any good on TV? I just got the awful thought that Hillary wanted him in so he could supply the anti-Bush rants for the Sunday shows. (Obviously putting Blanco or Nagin on wouldn't do the dems much good -- apart from at DU, of course.)
