President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

They are threatening to take over the base, with or without permission!!

Big words from a group that does nothing to actually help people

Why don't they go down there .. roll up their sleeves and actually help the people in need?

"oh jeez - if you're keeping a cuss jar I owe you "big time" bucks - can we arrange an installment plan"

LOL - I owe myself big time bucks after this last week, too.
How about you start yours and I'll start mine - after a month or so we can give the proceeds to the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, or another Katrina charity of choice.

I spoke to someone yesterday who evacuated from New Orleans to Houston. She referred to herself as a "refugee".

My special sources tell me that most of Brit's production crew is in the New Orleans area right now.

I personally know at least one producer who is. He was outside in Gulfport during the entire hurricane and the hotel he was staying in was destroyed.

"These people WANT a racial riot/confrontation."

There's a lot of people in this country whose nerves are on the ragged edge about this disaster. (as evidenced by some of the spats among long-time friends on this thread, alone)

I HOPE the race-baiters come to their senses before they ignite something they can't control.

And when the base turns into total squalor and there is not enough food, let me guess, it will be the feds' fault again or as Carol Mosely Braun put it earlier, "racism by omission"

I agree with No Blue States that the survivors probably would prefer to stay as near their former homes as they can. But what I suspect they would MOST prefer is clean drinking water, a hot meal, a chance to shower and get medical attention, and a clean, safe place to sleep.

And as of right now, that is NOT to be found at England Industrial Airpark!

Normally a city will have a charter, or documented incorporation. As the city council is designed, and constructed (as in strong mayor, or strong council); there is normally a succession clause. Such as the illness or death of the mayor, or a substantial portion of the city council. Continuation of executive functions. I doubt that New Orleans planned on all of the wage-slaves (taxpayers) being evacuated from the city, let alone the state. Therefore, he is now Mayor of the Mudpuddle.

I would say that if they hadn't had those guns, the people that have been rescued the last couple of days would still be waiting!!!

We have the Jesse Jackson and Sharptons and their years of race baiting to thank..

I swear there is a contingent in this country that WANTS to start a civil war between the whites and black people.

I just don't get it...it is so maddening, and yet so sad!

Mayfield called both Nagin and Blanco Saturday night. That was the night Nagin said during an interview on tv that he was checking with his attorneys to see whether he had the legal authority to issue a mandatory evacuation. Believe it was WWLTV.

I don't believe it...the reporter Steve on FOX changed what a guy he was interviewing said. The intervieweee said "They've got idiots running this city"....the reporter parrots back "They've got idiots running this thing."

I just saw that. Harrigan is admitting that they are moving people out, but is still stomping all over the rescue effort. He also gave a man he was so concerned about some sunscreen but said he only had one hat and could not give him that.
