President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Yes, this is alo more than just NO. My in-laws reported in from Hattiesburg, MS this morning (80 miles inland from the coast).
Things could get worse there very quickly. My in-laws live in a suburb of Hattiesburg and there have been generators stolen left and right from people's garages.
No lie, someone started a lawnmower in one of their neighbor's garages and left that running so they would think the generator was stil there. They have to chain the generator to the door frame every night then barricade the garage door.
People have drilled holes in the gas pumps to siphon gas.
One thing that needs to be done fairly quickly is to get some fly-over planes with banners for messages about supply and gas arrival, no one knows when things are coming in. It seems like perhaps some private pilots could get involved in this effort and coordinate with FEMA..just a suggestion.

What you just posted should be the PROOF of how ill-prepared the "powers that be" were in New Orleans...

Instead of telling them to get their pets, and get the heck out of there....they are threatening them with punishment...

What did these people think was going to happen? Just a summer thunderstorm, and all would be well? For at least 2-3 days the weather people were warning them...

Uh it tells you how to leave them at home(3 choices)...but it also tells the mayor of NO he has authority to command a mandatory evacuation, apparently something he did not read..

Leaving your pet at home
• Confine your pet to a safe, high-area inside your home, away from windows and outside walls.
• Leave water in a sturdy no spill container
• Give them a three-day supply of dry food
• Post a notice outside your home listing what animals are inside and where they are located
• Never leave pets together during a disaster
• Never leave pets chained or loose outside

I don't know how anyone could post a link to a television ad, but I'd love to see some newspaper commentary about this matter which, imo, discourages people from leaving.

I heard several reporters say that they had given people rides - and dropped them off at the ramp or the SD or the Convention Center.

I never heard anybody say they'd gotten anybody out of the city.

That's what I've heard as well. Big surprise: when you got the crucially important job of race-baiting and bashing the president, you can't be bothered to actually help anybody. /sarc

"Now that the feds have taken over she's going to crawl back out to speak? Gimme a break"

I wonder if she'll be teary-eyed again. I thought she was going to break down when the President was speaking yesterday!

It depends on what channel you watch. Sky News and ITV News are actually showing the devastation - Sky News had a reporter wandering among the ruins this morning with a cameraman (2 AM your time).

The TV channels are reporting what the Democrats and the Mayor of New Orleans said about President Bush, however. So their shrill screeching is reaching our ears.

Regards, Ivan

My imagination? Or is CNN trying DESPERATELY to make this a race thing??

Why is no one on CNN crying about all the WHITE PEOPLE in the other Parishes going through the same thing??

I see politics here beyond what I ever thought possible, being done on the bodies of the dead...
Typical DNC...

I'm taking pain medication for a bad back yesterday and today and my comprehension skills aren't terribly good right now :-)

However, if the reports of the ads are correct, then people got conflicting information at best.

And I would be my car that more people heard what was on television regarding this matter than went on the internet or read about the care and handling of pets during a natural disaster.

Arghhh, wet bed! They need to get people out to the other parishes and let us know what's going on there. It's not just NO, there are 3 states affected by Katrina.

That's why I'm checking this thread for the last week, because I'll get better info here, than the lamestream media. I can only take small doses of Shep and Geraldo before I'm craving a tall beer :/

Yeah -- thank you.

And thank God for that -- after Shep and Geraldo last nite, and F&F this morning, I was starting to feel a little shell-shocked.

Sounds like some of the military that Bush is ordering into New Orleans needs to be spread around to other communities that are having problem with people that just DO NOT know how to act....

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and all of the complaining is coming from New Orleans (I know, it IS the worse off), but people in Miss. and Alabama need help also.

Just like those Vietnamese mentioned in above posts...they are waiting patiently for their turns...so no one knew of their plight...

It is the people that are doing their best, and being aware of what is going on around them, that I want to help.

Incredible. The Vietnamese have been great citizens there. Of course, they're hated by the local population, but what else would you expect?
