President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

I agree and the time will come for blame. Right now we need positive reinforcement to get thru this and get it accomplished.

Looks to be a huge military mobilization within 24 hours of Bush's visit. Coincidence?

Not really. Likely started contingency planning a week ago, and firmed up starting on Tuesday. It takes a few days to execute.

"Looks to be a huge military mobilization within 24 hours of Bush's visit. Coincidence?"

If they're getting on-scene now, that means that the actual "mobilization" was 24-48 hours ago. It takes TIME to move assets and get unpacked/setup/organized.

24-48 hours is really pushing it, and shows a heroic effort on the part of our military.

Brown is saying people who want to lash out, let them lash out. That's okay with him. He's on mission. Sounds alot like the POTUS and that he clearly has the support of the POTUS.

Well, he's from Mississippi and much of what he knew of the State has been trashed.

Yes, the Gulf Coast of MS got horribly brutalized. I'm sure there's damage and destruction further upstate, as well.

Shep is from Holly Springs (up north, near Memphis) and it would have been nice to see him report on some of the happenings up there. Would have lent some more credence to his " … what used to be Mississippi" comment.

But that's just carping at this point.

Thank you for your response to NittanyLion. I know that people will insist that it took the President to actually show up for the assistance to show up. Someone on the news last night complained why we could get troops into Iraq in 24 hours, not into NO. I challenge anyone out there to load up the supplies that the NG has loaded up and get anywhere in 24 hours (well, except outside their own home base, :-)).

BurbankKarl was posting photos of the supplies brought in, they had food and water. medical and sanitary was another story.

You are right. I saw the photo... but it looked liked supplies for a few thousand. There were up to 20-30 thousand at the Convention Center. They started getting things there yesterday but the situation was just so horrid and there were so many dead and dying the only thing that would help them was to get them out of there. Praise God that is finally happening.

There is a massive evacuation from the Convention center of Armed forces helicopters, clearing the area out completely.

They first brought food and water, and now they are airlifting everyone out.......all filing in an orderly manner, many smiling.

It's just AWESOME! Praise GOD for this country, and for our incredible military!

So I think the "no food no water" comment has to be taken as OUT OF the material that was earlier provided. They had some, but needed more.

I'd like to see footage today of them getting food, water and information. I haven't seen it yet and I want to - I watched this everyday, every channel.

The guys & gals of the Coast Guard have also done one hell of a job - I decided sometime mid week not to give to the Red Cross but to double my monthly donation to the USO

Yeah, perhaps they were already mobilizing prior to yesterday's visit. My thought was that Bush saw the disarray on the ground and really "motivated" some folks to get their butts in gear.

Only a few still here. They are waiting to get back down there and see if anything can be saved. My aunt and uncle from Metarie think there house may be okay, a neighbor called and said they had no water and no damage. I think they are concerned about looters, but what can they do?

They all are getting so upset when they see the news coverage and the Bush bashing that they don't want the TV on any news channels. So I am getting everything from here. I'm talking anger to the point of tears. The race card, our inept officials, seeing the babies and people still down there, the rapes and murders. It really is an added stress on them emotionally. They are confident in Bush and are hoping he just takes charge and Blanco and company stand down.
