President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

"Well, I like your post except the part about burying the dead. Don't bury them in NO. Put them on trucks and get them out."

That's fine, too. Get the survivors out first, but the dead deserve a dignified burial. Plus the bodies are a health hazard. I'm really surprised no-one has tried to bury them, not even the NG.

Might be true. CNN is editing out from their earlier stories the fact that Blanco ordered the evacuation ONLY AFTER SHE WAS PRESSURED BY THE PRESIDENT. I wonder what conversations Blanco had with Hillary and her advisors about the advantages a humanitarian disaster would bring to the democrats in future elections.

Just reporting what I saw on a tv segment.

How is it then that no one even knew anyone was at the CC if it was one of the official sites?

Why did no one realize that it was full of people?

hysterically reported a falsehood.

Be mad at Geraldo all you want. But there is no "falsehood." They got some food and water late yesterday but I saw these people on TV and there were women and babies standing in the elements for days without help of any kind. It was not a "falsehood" that people were still dead and dying. Hell, I don't think the FEMA guy even knew they were there until yesterday, even though reporters had been screaming about it for days. Sorry, I disagree with you. I'm witnessing a total lack of empathy from people here. It's appalling.

Sunny,
At the time Geraldo made the report, those people had food and water. That is a FACT. He reported otherwise. That also, is a FACT. He also said they had been there 6 days.

Looks like Fox will have Geraldo next. Mark my words, he'll take credit for the evacs at the CC that are now taking place.

You called it. Time-stamp on Jerry Rivers' self-congratulatory report, 9:49 am CDT.

9:15 A.M. - (AP) Since the hurricane, people have displayed a massive outpouring of charity. Total donations passed the $200 million mark by Friday, four days after the storm slammed into the Gulf Coast. The bulk of those funds were collected by the Red Cross, which said it has raised $196.9 million from individuals and corporations.

Governor Blanco's letter to President Bush Regarding Hurricane Katrina

September 3, 2005

President George W. Bush
The White House
Washington, DC 20502

By Fax

Dear Mr. President:

On behalf of all Louisianans, I thank you for your visit yesterday to see the devastation Hurricane Katrina has inflicted on the lives of our citizens. The enormity of the situation is, as you saw yourself, impossible to truly comprehend without seeing it firsthand.

I am deeply grateful for your willingness to come down to personally pledge to the people of Louisiana to do whatever it takes to get the job done. We appreciate the unique contributions that the Department of Defense has made, and know that if the soldiers and assets I have requested are immediately deployed consistent with that pledge, we can rescue our citizens still in harm's way, reclaim our communities and rebuild them, and give our people renewed hope for the future.

I also agree with your idea that - given the unprecedented requests for federal military assistance that I, and my fellow Governors in Mississippi and Alabama have made - a "single military commander" of "Federal Joint Task Force Katrina" be named for federal forces.

I believe such a decision is critical to improving the timeliness of fulfilling and coordinating the requests for federal assistance that have already been made. This officer would serve as the single military commander for all Department of Defense resources providing support to the Department of Homeland Security and the State of Louisiana. This could also enhance the contribution of over 25 National Guard states currently being commanded by the Louisiana Adjutant General.

I ask that you direct the assigned Federal Coordinating Officer at the Department of Homeland Security (FEMA) to co-locate with my Homeland Security and Emergency and Preparedness Office at the Federal Joint Task Force headquarters. This would make the Joint Interagency Operations Center a truly integrated operation.

Mr. President, these actions are essential to ensure unity of effort and a fully coordinated federal, state and local response to this extraordinary natural disaster. I look forward to your favorable response to my request and welcome any comments or suggestions you might have. Thank you again for your efforts on behalf of Louisiana.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Babineaux Blanco
Governor
State of Louisiana

I was wondering about the 6 days. Did they arrive on Sunday, or this a Wednesday on situation at the CC? And I had read about his "show" last night, and watched it when I got home. I was furious how he had the Police Officer so upset. He got him worked up long before they went on camera; convinced him to put on a Geraldo "show." That is truly, the first time in recent history, I have been disgusted with Geraldo.

I agree. The dead won't care. They should be handled last. And saving the survivors comes first always.

An observation from this non-white,non-black woman (Filipino) with a Hispanic husband about this race issue:

All I see Jesse Jackson, Julian Bond and their ilk doing are making excuses for the behavior of the criminal element of "their people," and blaming other races (especially whites) and President Bush instead of focusing and THANKING those of any race who are helping save "their people." If they wanted, they could focus on just the blacks who are helping! I'm sure there are plenty.

I've seen the looters on TV and hear this garbage out of their mouths and I'm sickened that they are further victimizing those they claim to represent.

After this disaster is over, will JJ, Bond, Rev. Al, etc. work to educate their people on how to take care of themselves? Will they tell them that the best way to make it in this country is education and the willingness to work, and to have a good family structure?

When I was a kid, my family came here with only my dad's education but no money. Sure we've encountered racism here and there from individuals, but we were just grateful to be in the US. We've lived our lives here for 30+ years, just studying, working, raising our families and going to church. Nobody has ever "represented" our race. We just wanted to be left alone to live our lives, like ordinary people. Today my siblings and I are all college educated, one served in the Navy Reserves, most of us have families and have our homes in the suburbs. I'm not writing this to brag, but just the experience of a minority family in the US without the "benefit" of being "represented" by a race leader and making excuses for us for why it was so hard in the beginning when we had no money and no home.

/sarc on
But then again, I'm a FReeper so I must be one of those whacked out racists, right? Or, I must be yellow on the outside but white on the outside (Banana? Twinkie?) /sarc

They don't normally "bury" people in NO. The water table is too high. So, they have to move them out.

I have nothing but empathy. I don't think my eart could break over this more. I wanted these people evac-ed Tuesday.

But I (yes, cynically) think Geraldo has his own agenda. He WILL take credit for this.

Local consumption? You mean the people on the bridge around him?

Yes, exactly that. I would think they would've all had to be in on the fraud "hiding their food and water" for the cameras to catch.

Well, I watched the piece with Geraldo and the police chief three times. Here is my take. The police chief is the one who said "no water, no food, 30,000 people" in response to an open question from Geraldo. The GEraldo panned to the crowd, entered the crowd, and asked one guy if had eaten any of the food that had been left.

So I think the "no food no water" comment has to be taken as OUT OF the material that was earlier provided. They had some, but needed more.

I don't think the misery is staged in New Orleans, if you do then you may win some sort of cynic award.

Be nice. Of course the misery is real. I just suspect the presentation and hysterics is staged for effect. And as I said earlier, to the extent it pacifies the crowd, it is probably okay - but it in fact does not inform the relief authorities anything they do not already know, and it (maybe also for good reason) paints a misleading picture for the viewer.
