Katrina Live Thread, Part XIV

President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

The Gulf is already extremely polluted. When you fly into the United States from the south, the water is a beautiful aquamarine... until you get close to the US. It turns to an ugly brown with the shimmering green and blue on top. It looks much like the toxic soup bowl of NO right now. This would make environmentalist's hair stand on end, and I'm not expert, but I can't see this bit of water harming the Gulf worse than it already is. Just pump it and be done with it.

Or BJ Titan,, however Haliburton would probably get some good press out of this if they volunteered a few blenders and about 20 pump trucks.

"I believe in trying to escape from a storm, but as in Charley last year, people that fled inland from the Tampa Bay area, say to Polk County, ended up right in the path of the storm because it turn in at Charlotte County and tore a path of destruction up the middle of the state."

I live in Polk County and told everyone to stock up on supplies and gas. The common response was, "Why, the storm is going to Tampa". I told them that the evacuees would clean us out as they would all come here. Afterward, I had a lot of people telling me "Thanks for the advice". We didn't have any looting here either.

Thank you---I am totally impressed that you knew that.

I was just going to see if I could find out if it was habitable...it doesn't seem so long ago, that I was taking friends of my children's back and forth from there.

I saw that. I wish the warning had been more specific. Such as "if you live in the 9th Ward and the storm surge is "x" the water will be "y" and you will be sitting on your roofs waiting for rescue. A direct hit will mean a storm surge of between "x" and "z".."

"I'm listening to Bobby Jindal and he is just another prig as far as I'm concerned"

I have to agree w you. I read about him before the election and was pleased he got elected. IMHO as I've listened to him over the past few days, he has not been at all supportive of the Pres and the Admin - if I didn't know there was an (R) after his name, I'd think he was a Dim (though, he hasn't been quite as obscene as most of the Dims have been).

"Watching live feed, The area at I10 and the causeway looks deserted. I guess they got all those people out there. :)"

That's great! Help for the stranded is getting results.
Hopefully no-one will be left on the causeway or convention center or dome for geraldo to cry over tonight.

Unfortunately, no. I wish it was, it was a rather neat station.

I know this because there was a discussion about what Dallas was wasting their money on a few months back in the press, did some investigating and went out to go look at it (it's in Grand Prairie, next to the junkyards on Jefferson).

It doesn't matter whether SHE was one of the starving/thirsty ones - My point was that SOMEONE where she was IS starving/thirsty, and SHE WASTED VALUABLE CLEAN WATER by pouring it over herself instead of either drinking it herself or giving it to someone who needed it. In an hour, she'll be asking for more water from "the government" because she wasted the water she was given!!

I was responding to a different portion of the prior post. Your point is completely valid--and well taken.

Prayers for ALL!

Ok sure...Now that the President came down there and started kicking some butt, the governor now has a new statement!?

Has she been around and I just haven't seen her or is she just coming out from under her desk?

Britt disappeared without notice or explanation, and now Tony.

Where, oh where have all the conservatives gone?

I got the impression from watching some interviews last night...that there are still quite a few people stranded all over the city...individual houses and such.

They have showed what looks like a high rise apartment building on Fox today that has people on the balcony, waving a white towel...wonder how many people might be in that building?

It's frustrating to watch at home and be able to do NOTHING except scream at the TV or post on FR. I think we are all still in shock particularly by the outrageous statements, blame game, etc.

Yes, indeed, it is frustrating, and yes, I am thoroughly angered by the blame game. The leftist media is spinning this the same way they spin the war in Iraq and for the same reason -- all bad news, even if they have to invent it, to turn public opinion against President Bush and his administration.

I don't think she will resiign, either. I think this will be another whining presser without much concrete information.

I asked my brother (retired army) this morning if he thought scanners are being jammed by the military and he said no. He said they would be interfering with other emergency personnel and that jamming could only be directed specifically.

First, he said that is all that is being talked about..but then said that Europe, from the leaders to the media, to the citizens ALL are saying what a lousy job Bush has done... AND, how can the richest, most powerful nation in the world, let this happen, and most of all treat their black people like the do???

Gosh, I really hope that isn't true. Ivan, what are you hearing?
